Tha Chill's Music Career
Starting with Compton's Most Wanted
When CMW was recording their first album, It's a Compton Thang, Tha Chill had a short break from recording. He returned a few weeks later to finish his parts on the album's songs.
He was not able to appear on the group's next two albums. These were Straight Checkn 'Em in 1991 and Music to Driveby in 1992. After some time away, he rejoined the group. He was a featured artist on their reunion album, Represent. This album came out after the group had been apart for eight years.
Later, Vernon Johnson joined a new group called N...z on tha Run. He joined with Gene "Boom Bam" Heisser. Tha Chill also worked a lot with the Killafornia Organization. Since 1998, he has produced music for many artists. These include 213, Above The Law, Kokane, MC Ren, RBX, and MC Eiht's solo projects.
New Music and Groups
Johnson started his own music company called Bigfutt Entertainment. He planned to release his first solo album, Tha Wind Chill Factor. The song "Smoke Dis F-N-J" came out in 2003 to support it. The album was delayed but was finally released on October 13, 2009.
In 2010, Johnson partnered with Chad Kiser’s Hoopla Media Group. This was for his own record label, Bump Johnson Inc. He released two mixtapes and an extended play (EP). He left the label in 2012.
Since 2011, Tha Chill has been part of a hip hop supergroup called 1st Generation. Other members include MC Eiht, Jayo Felony, Kurupt from Tha Dogg Pound, King T from Likwit Crew, Gangsta from The Comrads, and producers Sir Jinx and DJ Battlecat. This group helped with Tha Chill's second album, Chillafornia. It was released in 2012. This album followed his 2010 Chillafornia EP. His third solo album, which was mostly instrumental, came out on September 10, 2013.
Tha Chill also formed another supergroup called Diirty OGz. The group includes Kurupt, Tray Deee from Tha Eastsidaz, Weazel Loc, and Kokane. Their first album, We Got Now and Next, was released on October 28, 2016. On November 2, 2018, Tha Chill released his fourth solo album, 4Wit80. The sixth Compton's Most Wanted album, Gangsta Bizness, was released in 2019.
