Thalia Zedek (born in 1961) is an American singer and guitarist. She has been making music since the early 1980s. Thalia was a member of several well-known alternative rock bands. These include Live Skull, Uzi, and Come. A music critic named Heather Phares described Thalia's music as having a strong, emotional voice and powerful guitar sounds. Her songs often tell clear stories about life and loss.

Thalia Zedek grew up near Washington, D.C.. She went to Springbrook High School in Maryland. There, she played the clarinet in the marching band. The punk music scene of the late 1970s greatly shaped her musical style. She was especially inspired by the artist Patti Smith. While still in high school, Thalia would travel to New York City with her brother, Dan Zedek, to see Patti Smith perform live.

In 1979, Thalia moved to Boston. She attended Boston University for a short time. However, she soon decided to focus on her music career instead.

Early Bands and Sound

Thalia's first band was called White Women. It was an all-female group that broke up after a couple of years. Next, she formed the band Dangerous Birds. This group had more success. They even released a song called "Smile on Your Face/Alpha Romeo," which was played on college radio stations. But Thalia wanted a stronger, more intense sound for her music.

Her next band, Uzi, aimed for this goal. They released an EP (a short album) called Sleep Asylum. This EP featured mysterious and powerful lyrics. It also had strong, layered guitar sounds mixed with cool synthesizer and tape effects. Even with the promise of Sleep Asylum, Uzi broke up due to disagreements within the band.

Joining Live Skull and Come

After Uzi, Thalia became the main singer for New York City's Live Skull. This band was already well-known. Their first album with Thalia, Dusted, showed a great mix of Thalia's voice and Live Skull's complex music. However, their next album, Positraction, did not do as well. Live Skull also broke up in 1990 because of conflicts.

Soon after, Thalia helped start the band Come. She formed it with Codeine drummer and guitarist Chris Brokaw. Come became her most successful project. They released four albums before the group ended in 2001.

Solo Career and Other Projects

In 2001, Thalia also released her first solo album, Been Here and Gone. Since then, she has released six more full-length solo albums and several EPs (short albums).

Thalia also took part in the 1998 Suffragette Sessions tour. This tour was organized by the Indigo Girls. In 2006, she performed at a music festival called North East Sticks Together.

Even though she has not had huge commercial success, Thalia Zedek has been praised by music critics throughout her career. Many believe she has been very important in the world of indie-rock music. She has especially influenced the active indie music scene in Boston.
