Thalia Zedek's Early Life and Music Journey
Thalia Zedek grew up in the Washington, D.C. area. She went to Springbrook High School in Maryland. There, she played the clarinet in the marching band. The punk music scene of the late 1970s greatly shaped her musical style. She was especially inspired by the artist Patti Smith. While still in high school, Thalia would travel to New York City with her brother, Dan Zedek. They went to see Patti Smith perform live.
Moving to Boston and First Bands
In 1979, Thalia moved to Boston. She attended Boston University for a short time. However, she soon decided to focus on her music career instead. Her first band was an all-female group called White Women. This band broke up after a couple of years.
After White Women, she formed a new band called the Dangerous Birds. This group had more success. They released a single called "Smile on Your Face/Alpha Romeo." This song was played on college and alternative radio stations. But Thalia wanted a "more violent" sound. She felt her bandmates had a "girlie pop" style.
Forming Uzi and Live Skull
Thalia's next project was the band Uzi. She aimed for a harder sound with this group. Uzi released an EP (a short album) called Sleep Asylum. This EP featured mysterious lyrics and strong instrumental music. It had layers of thick guitar sounds mixed with synthesizer effects. However, Uzi broke up because of disagreements between Thalia and the band's drummer.
Next, Thalia became the main singer for New York City's Live Skull. This band was already well-known. Their first album together, Dusted, showed a strong connection between Thalia's singing and Live Skull's complex music. But their next album, Positraction, did not do as well. Live Skull also broke up in 1990 due to conflicts.
Success with Come and Solo Career
Soon after, Thalia helped start the band Come. She formed it with Codeine drummer and guitarist Chris Brokaw. Come became her most successful band. They released four albums before breaking up in 2001.
In the same year, 2001, Thalia released her first solo album. It was called Been Here and Gone. Since then, she has released six more full-length solo albums. She has also released several EPs (short albums) on her own.
Thalia Zedek also took part in the 1998 Suffragette Sessions tour. This tour was organized by the Indigo Girls. In 2006, she performed at the North East Sticks Together festival.
Even though she has not had huge commercial success, music critics have praised Thalia Zedek throughout her career. She has been very influential in the indie-rock music world. This is especially true in the busy Boston indie music scene, which has produced many important artists.
