The Courtship of Eddie's Father was a popular American sitcom (a funny TV show about everyday life). It was based on a 1963 movie with the same name, which came from a novel by Mark Toby.
The show is about Tom Corbett, a magazine publisher who is a widower (meaning his wife had passed away). He lives with his young son, Eddie. Eddie really wants his dad to get married again. So, he often tries to set up his dad with different women!
The series first aired on September 17, 1969. The last episode was shown on March 1, 1972. The actor who played Tom, Bill Bixby, was even nominated for an Emmy Award for his role.

What the Show Is About
The story focuses on Tom Corbett (Bill Bixby), a handsome magazine publisher in Los Angeles. He is in his thirties and raising his six-year-old son, Eddie (Brandon Cruz), by himself. Tom's wife, Helen, had passed away.
Eddie, who has freckles and is quite clever, really wants a new mom. Because of this, he often tries to help his dad find a new wife. He even tries to make his dad fall for women Eddie already likes!
Their home life is managed by their kind Japanese housekeeper, Mrs. Livingston (Miyoshi Umeki). She gives wise advice and sometimes helps Eddie with his plans. Mrs. Livingston always calls Tom "Mr. Eddie's Father."
Other characters include Tina Rickles (Kristina Holland), Tom's secretary at the magazine. There's also Norman Tinker (James Komack), the magazine's photographer. Norman acts like a fun uncle to Eddie.
Meet the Cast
Main Characters
Bill Bixby and Brandon Cruz were the only actors who appeared in every single episode.
- Bill Bixby as Tom Corbett: He is a widower and works as a magazine editor.
- Brandon Cruz as Eddie Corbett: Tom's young and clever son.
- Miyoshi Umeki as Mrs. Livingston: She is Tom and Eddie's helpful housekeeper.
- Kristina Holland as Tina Rickles: Tom's secretary at the magazine.
- James Komack as Norman Tinker: Tom's friend and partner at the magazine.
Guest Stars
Many actors who later became famous appeared on the show. These are called "guest stars" because they were only in one or a few episodes. Some well-known guest stars included:
Even future stars from the show Happy Days, Pat Morita and Erin Moran, made guest appearances. Sometimes, very famous people make a "cameo appearance." This means they appear briefly, often as themselves or a small role. For example, the singer Sammy Davis, Jr. appeared as an insurance man. Bill Bixby's wife at the time, Brenda Benet, also played one of Tom's girlfriends.
Future Plans for the Show
Sometimes, popular movies or TV shows are remade years later. This is called a "remake." There were plans to make a new movie version of The Courtship of Eddie's Father.
In 1999, it was reported that actor Nicolas Cage might star in and produce a new movie. However, the plans didn't go forward. The original Eddie, Brandon Cruz, thought it was because Cage's son grew too old for the part.
In 2003, a new TV show pilot (a test episode for a new series) was filmed. It starred Ken Marino and Josh Hutcherson. But this pilot was not picked up by a TV network, so the show was never made. Interestingly, Brandon Cruz, who played Eddie in the original series, had a small role in this new pilot.
