The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking is a 1988 musical adventure film. It was written and directed by Ken Annakin. The movie is based on the popular Pippi Longstocking book series by Astrid Lindgren.

This film was a joint project between Sweden and the United States. It was made by Columbia Pictures, Longstocking Productions, and Svensk Filmindustri. Even though the title says "New Adventures," this movie actually tells the original Pippi story again. It's a remake of earlier films.

The movie was filmed in Fernandina Beach, Florida on Amelia Island. Some scenes were also shot on soundstages in Jacksonville, Florida. It first came out in Tokyo on March 8, 1988. Later, it was released in the United States on July 29 and in Sweden on September 9. The film got mixed reviews from critics and did not earn a lot of money. It was the last movie Ken Annakin directed before he passed away in 2009.

Pippi's Exciting Story

Pippi Longstocking travels on a ship called the Hoptoad with her sailor father, Efraim. One day, a big storm hits, caused by a volcano. Pippi's father disappears into the sea during the storm.

Pippi then travels to a small town by the coast called Rocksby. She brings her horse, Alfonso, and her monkey, Mr. Nilsson, with her. Pippi moves into her father's old house, Villa Villekulla. The children in the neighborhood think the house is haunted.

Soon, a brother and sister named Tommy and Annika Settigren see lights in the windows. They go inside, hoping to find ghosts. Instead, they meet Pippi, Mr. Nilsson, and Alfonso! They quickly become good friends.

Adventures with New Friends

Pippi, Tommy, and Annika have many fun adventures together. They make pancakes, clean the floor by wearing scrubbing shoes, and serve ice cream to children at the local children's home. They even ride a motorcycle and try to avoid strange "splunks."

Pippi also has to deal with Mr. Blackhart and his helpers, Rype and Rancid. They want to tear down her house and sell the land. Pippi also tries to avoid Miss Bannister, who runs the children's home. Miss Bannister believes Pippi would be safer living there.

To escape, Pippi agrees to run away with Tommy and Annika in a homemade autogyro. They almost go over a waterfall while riding in barrels down a river, but they are rescued just in time.

Pippi's Big Decision

Tommy and Annika's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Settigren, worry that Pippi might be a bad influence. They tell their children not to play with her anymore. Pippi thinks her friends would be better off without her, so she goes to the children's home. She has to leave Mr. Nilsson and Alfonso behind.

Pippi finds it hard to fit in at the children's home. She is not used to following rules or going to school. However, a fire accidentally starts at the children's home. Pippi bravely saves all the children! The townspeople praise her as a hero. After this, she is allowed to go back home and play with Tommy and Annika again.

On Christmas Day, Pippi is reunited with her father, Efraim! He tells her he was washed ashore on an uncharted island and became its king. He offers Pippi the chance to become a princess there. Pippi agrees, and everyone comes to say a sad goodbye.

Just as they are about to sail away, Pippi changes her mind. She sees how sad everyone is to see her go. She tells her father that she cannot leave Tommy and Annika. Efraim understands and tells her he loves her. They say goodbye, and Pippi goes home with Tommy, Annika, Mr. Nilsson, and Alfonso.
