The Numtums is a fun British computer-animated TV show. It was created by Barry Quinn for CBeebies. The show is all about 10 special creatures called the Numtums. Each Numtum has a number on its tummy!

The show first started in the United Kingdom on CBeebies on February 28, 2011. It finished on December 17, 2013. In the United States, the show began on Qubo on January 1, 2015. There are a total of 3 series of The Numtums.

What are The Numtums About?

The Numtums tells the story of 10 colorful creatures. They are called Numtums and live in a place called Gumnut Gorge. These characters are based on numbats, which are small animals from Australia. That's why they love to eat termites at their cafe, the Tasty Termite!

Each Numtum has a number on its tummy. Most of them are named after towns in Australia. Even though they are based on Australian animals, their home, Gumnut Gorge, looks more like deserts in the southwestern United States. It has big cacti and rocky arches.

  • Billy is an indigo-colored Numtum-like hedgehog. He is a cool character in Gumnut Gorge and appears in series 2 and 3.

Other Animals in Gumnut Gorge

The Numtums share their world with other interesting animals.

  • Larry is a lyrebird.
  • The Flamingos live in Gumnut Gorge. They often need to be put in the correct order in the show.
  • Fluffy McTuffy is Super Numtum's main enemy. She is a koala who wants to take over the world.
  • Frilly Lizzy is McTuffy's helper. She is a smart, quiet, and calm frilled lizard.

How The Numtums Were Made

The Numtums was animated by different companies. Beakus animated the first series. A Productions took over for series 2 and 3.

The first series was made for very young children. But for series 2 and 3, the show was changed for an older audience. It started teaching more complex ideas. These included subtraction, recognizing shapes, and numbers from 11 to 20. The animation also became more detailed.

Barry Quinn, the creator, explained why he chose numbats. He said that experts suggested bright, cute characters to help kids learn numbers. Many animal names were thought of, but he liked "numbats" because it had "num" in its name.
