The Skirrid Mountain Inn is a very old and famous inn, or public house, located in a small village called Llanfihangel Crucorney. This village is about 4 miles (6.4 km) north of Abergavenny in Monmouthshire, Wales. It's known for its interesting history and spooky stories!

History of the Skirrid Inn

The Skirrid Mountain Inn was mostly built in the mid-to-late 1600s. Some people believe an inn might have been there even earlier. This is because it was on a path used by pilgrims traveling to Llanthony Priory. However, there is no real proof that an older inn stood on this spot.

Legends and Stories

There are many popular stories about the Skirrid Mountain Inn. One legend says it was a meeting place for supporters of the Welsh Revolt. This was a rebellion against King Henry IV, led by Owain Glyndŵr.

It is said that Owain Glyndŵr himself gathered his troops in the inn's cobbled courtyard. They then went to raid nearby villages that supported the English in the 1400s. However, the inn was not built until the 1600s, so this story is likely just a legend.

The Old Courtroom

Another old story says that the first floor of the inn was once used as a courtroom. In this court, people were sentenced to death for serious crimes. These crimes included things like stealing sheep.

Legend claims that as many as 180 people were found guilty and sentenced to death. The hangings were supposedly carried out right at the inn. This happened from an oak beam over the staircase. You can still see marks on the staircase wood, which some say are from the ropes.

Haunted Tales

Because of these old, unproven stories, the inn has a reputation for being haunted. Many people believe several ghosts or spirits live there. There have been many reports of strange things happening.

The inn has even been featured on TV shows about ghosts. It appeared on Extreme Ghost Stories and Most Haunted with Yvette Fielding.

Exploring the Area

The Skirrid Mountain Inn is in a beautiful part of Wales. It looks out towards the Skirrid Mountain to the east. To the west, you can see the Black Mountains, Wales, which are part of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The valleys of the River Usk, River Wye, and River Monnow are all nearby. The famous walking path, Offa's Dyke Path, also runs close to the inn. This makes it a great spot for visitors who love nature and hiking.
