Theodore Alexander Ripley was an American soldier who became a Brevet Brigadier General during the American Civil War. He led the 14th New Hampshire Infantry Regiment from when it was formed until it was disbanded. After the war, Ripley moved to Emanuel County, Georgia, where his life sadly ended.
Early Life and Family
Theodore Alexander Ripley was born on December 23, 1835. Before the war, he worked as a merchant in New York City. He married Harriet Sophia Fulham on July 9, 1857.
Service in the Civil War
On October 2, 1862, Ripley joined the 14th New Hampshire Infantry Regiment. He started as a Captain in Company F.
During the Battle of Cedar Creek, Ripley was captured by enemy forces. He was held as a prisoner at Libby Prison until March 1865. He faced many hardships while imprisoned.
After his release, Ripley received a special honor. On March 13, 1865, he was made a Brevet Brigadier General. This was a temporary higher rank given for brave service. He was also promoted to a full Colonel on March 29, 1865. Ripley left the military in late May 1865.
