Thomas E. Matthews joined the United States Army and served for many years. He became a high-ranking officer called a Colonel. A Colonel is a senior leader in the army. They are in charge of many soldiers and important missions.
His Role in Mogadishu
In 1993, Colonel Matthews played a key role in the Battle of Mogadishu. This battle took place in Somalia. He commanded the 1st Battalion of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne). This unit flies special helicopters.
During the battle, Colonel Matthews was in a helicopter called Super 6-3. He was with another officer, Lt. Col. Gary Harrell. They guided the mission from above. Two Black Hawk helicopters from his unit were shot down. Sadly, five members of his unit died. This happened during a fight against forces led by Mohamed Farrah Aidid.
Awards and Recognition
For his brave actions in Somalia, Colonel Matthews received two important awards. President Bill Clinton gave him the Distinguished Flying Cross. He also received the Air Medal. These awards recognize great courage and skill in flying.
After the Military
After the Battle of Mogadishu, Colonel Matthews helped with a movie. He was an adviser for the film Black Hawk Down. This movie was about the battle. An actor named Glenn Morshower played Colonel Matthews in the film.
Later, Colonel Matthews retired from the military. He now works for the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This office is part of the Department of Defense. He lives in northern Virginia with his family.
