Thomas Peak is a tall mountain located in Nevada, United States. It is the second highest named peak in both the Ruby Mountains and Elko County. This makes it one of the tallest mountains in the entire state of Nevada!
The peak is about 24 miles (39 km) southeast of the city of Elko. It sits within the beautiful Ruby Mountains Wilderness, which is part of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Thomas Peak is a very large mountain, forming most of the east side of Thomas Canyon and the west side of the upper part of Lamoille Canyon.
Why the Mountain is Called Thomas Peak
Thomas Peak, along with the nearby canyon and campground, is named after a brave man named Raymond Thomas. He was a teacher at Elko High School.
In October 1916, Raymond Thomas was leading a group of hikers into the canyon. They were caught in an unexpected early snowstorm. Raymond Thomas worked hard to help his group stay safe until rescuers could arrive. Sadly, he died while helping others. The mountain and canyon were named in his honor to remember his courage and sacrifice.
