Thomas R. Kerr (born April 24, 1843 – died November 14, 1926) was an American soldier. He fought bravely during the American Civil War. Kerr received the highest award for courage in battle, the Medal of Honor.

Thomas R. Kerr was born in Coleraine, which is in County Londonderry, Ireland. He later moved to the United States. When the American Civil War began, he joined the Union Army.
A Hero in the Civil War
Kerr became a soldier in November 1862. He started as a second lieutenant in the 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry. This meant he was a junior officer. By May 1864, he was promoted to captain. This was a higher rank, showing his leadership skills.
His Amazing Bravery
Captain Kerr earned the Medal of Honor for a very brave act. On August 7, 1864, during the Battle of Moorefield in West Virginia, he captured a flag. This flag belonged to the Confederate 8th Virginia Cavalry. Capturing an enemy's flag was a very dangerous and important task. It showed great courage and helped boost the morale of his own troops. He received this special award on June 13, 1894.
Life After the War
Thomas R. Kerr finished his military service in June 1865. He resigned from the army after the war ended. He lived until November 14, 1926. Thomas R. Kerr is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. This is a famous military cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
