Thomas Tunstall was an English Catholic priest who lived in the 1600s. He is known as a Catholic martyr, meaning he died for his religious beliefs. The Catholic Church honored him by making him "Blessed" in 1929.

Life of Thomas Tunstall
Thomas Tunstall was born in a place called Lancashire, England. His family, the Tunstalls, were well-known in the area. Sometimes, he was also called "Helmes." Records show he was born near Carlisle.
Becoming a Priest
Thomas began his studies to become a priest at a special college in Douay, France, in 1607.
- On June 13, 1609, he received his first special church roles.
- Later that month, on June 24, he took another step in his training.
- He finished his studies and became a priest.
- He left the college as a priest on August 17, 1610.
Challenges and Capture
Soon after Thomas Tunstall returned to England, he was caught. At that time, being a Catholic priest in England was very dangerous. He spent about four or five years in different prisons.
Escape and Recapture
Thomas managed to escape from Wisbech Castle, one of the prisons. During his escape, his hands were hurt. He went to a friend's house near King's Lynn to get help for his injuries. However, when he sought medical care, the authorities found out where he was. He was captured again and sent to Norwich Gaol, another prison.
Trial and Execution
At his next trial, Thomas Tunstall was found guilty. He was sentenced to death. On July 13, 1616, he was executed just outside the Magdalen Gate of King's Lynn.
