Thomas West, 8th Baron De La Warr (born around 1457 – died 11 October 1525) was an important English nobleman. He was a courtier, meaning he served in the royal court, and a military leader. He lived during the reigns of two famous English kings, Henry VII and Henry VIII.

Who Was Thomas West?

Thomas West was the oldest son of Richard West, 7th Baron De La Warr and Katherine Hungerford. His father passed away in 1476. Thomas was about 19 years old at that time. He then took over his family's lands.

Early Life and Royal Service

King Henry VII knighted Thomas West in 1478. This was a special honor given to brave and loyal men. In 1489, he became a Knight of the Bath. This happened when King Henry VII's first son, Arthur, became the Prince of Wales.

Military Leadership and Honors

Thomas West was a skilled military commander. In 1491, he led English soldiers to help Emperor Maximilian against the French. He also helped stop the Cornish Rebellion in 1497. He was the main commander of the forces that fought at the Battle of Deptford Bridge.

In 1510, he received another high honor. He was made a Knight of the Garter. This is one of the most important knightly orders in England.

Later Years and Important Events

Thomas West continued to serve the king. In 1513, he took part in the sieges of Therouanne and Tournai. These were important battles in France. After the English won the Battle of the Spurs in 1513, he became a knight banneret. This was a special rank for knights who led their own troops in battle.

He also attended important royal events. In 1514, he was with Mary Tudor when she married King Louis XII of France. In 1520, he joined King Henry VIII at the famous Field of the Cloth of Gold. This was a grand meeting between the kings of England and France.

Final Years and Burial

Thomas West passed away on 11 October 1525. He was buried at St. Mary's Church, Broadwater, in Sussex. His wife, Eleanor, was also buried there later.
