Thornhill is a modern area located in the northern part of Cardiff, Wales. It is a "community," which is like a local area with its own services and identity. The Welsh name for Thornhill is Draenen Pen-y-graig. This name means 'thorn' (draen) + 'one' (-en) + 'top' (pen) + 'the' (y) + 'rock' (craig). So, it means something like 'Thorn on the Top of the Rock'. Thornhill is situated just south of a town called Caerphilly.

What is Thornhill Like?

Thornhill is a fairly new area. Most of the houses here were built from the late 1980s onwards. It has a central area that provides many important services for the people living there.

Local Services and Shops

In the heart of Thornhill, you'll find a handy area with several useful places:

  • A community centre, which is called the Thornhill Church Centre.
  • A Sainsbury's supermarket where you can buy groceries.
  • Inside the supermarket, there's also a Post Office and a Pharmacy.
  • The North Cardiff Medical Centre, where people can go for healthcare.

There are also three public houses, which are like local pubs, in Thornhill. These are called the Old Cottage, Pendragon, and the Ffynnon Wen.

Thornhill Cemetery

Close to Thornhill, in an area called Rhiwbina, is the Thornhill Cemetery. This is a large cemetery. A crematorium was built here in the 1950s. A crematorium is a place where bodies are cremated (burned) instead of buried.

How Thornhill Grew

Most of Thornhill's homes were built during the 1990s. The local council, Cardiff Council, first planned Thornhill to be like "The Villages of Thornhill." This meant they wanted groups of houses with big green spaces in between them. However, houses were built very quickly, and soon homes filled up the green areas too.

Historical Sites Nearby

Even though Thornhill is modern, it has some hidden historical spots. One example is the remains of a castle called Castell Morgraig. This old castle is located very close to the border between Thornhill and Caerphilly.
