Thornhill is a small village in Scotland. It is located in the Stirling area. The village is about 14 miles northwest of the city of Stirling. It is also close to other towns like Callander, Aberfoyle, and Doune. In Scottish Gaelic, its name is Cnoc na Driseig.

Thornhill is built on a small hill. This hill is at the edge of the Carse of Stirling. This area is a flat plain of farmland. It is part of the River Forth's flood area. For a long time, much of this land was boggy. But in the late 1700s, people worked hard to clear the peat. This revealed the rich clay soil underneath. Flanders Moss is a large area of lowland bog. It is a special place for nature. It lies to the southwest of Thornhill.

Thornhill was one of the first planned villages. It was founded in 1696. Most of its buildings are from the 1700s, 1800s, and 1900s. The village name "Thornhill" likely comes from the thorn bushes. These bushes used to cover the ridge where the village now stands.

Village Life and History

Thornhill is on an old route. This route goes from Dunblane to Aberfoyle. The village was planned and started in 1696. Most of its buildings are from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.

In 2001, about 1,109 people lived in the Thornhill and Blairdrummond area. This number includes the village and nearby places.

Thornhill has one primary school. In the 2009-2010 school year, 62 students attended. These students came from the village and the surrounding area.

The village has a community hall. This hall has a main room and meeting rooms. It also has a kitchen and changing rooms with showers. There is parking available too. Local people and other groups can use the hall.

Thornhill also has a pub called The Lion and Unicorn. It is located on Main Street. People believe it might be older than the village itself. It may have started as an inn for drovers (people who moved livestock) as early as 1635.

Ancient History

About 1 mile north of Thornhill, there are old ruins. These ruins are at a place called Boquhapple. They might be from an Iron Age broch. A broch was a type of round stone tower. Today, only a pile of rubble remains. This rubble mound is about 30 meters (98 feet) across. There are also some earthworks left.

Interesting Facts

Thornhill is believed to have the smallest Masonic Lodge in Scotland. A Masonic Lodge is a meeting place for a group called the Freemasons.
