History of Three Hills
Three Hills started with a post office in 1904. In 1912, it became a village. That same year, the village moved to its current spot. This new location was on the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway line. This railway connected Tofield and Calgary. Early residents were ranchers and farmers. Soon, Three Hills became a hub for the area's wheat farms.
Growth of the Town
In 1922, Prairie Bible Institute opened in Three Hills. It is now called Prairie College. This school helped the town's population grow. By the mid-1980s, the college campus and nearby small settlements joined the town. This made Three Hills bigger.
Hosting Big Events
Even though it's a small town, Three Hills hosted the Alberta Seniors Games in 1998. This was a big sports event for older adults. The town was chosen because Prairie College had large, well-equipped facilities. The opening and closing ceremonies took place in the college's Maxwell Memorial Tabernacle. This building could hold 4,200 people.
The Maxwell Tabernacle was Canada's largest religious auditorium. It was used from 1953 until 2005. It served as the college chapel and hosted concerts. It was also the worship center for a local church. The building was used for graduation ceremonies too. A new, smaller facility opened in 2020. The new Prairie Tabernacle is now near Prairie Christian Academy.
Modern Development
Recently, the town's food and lodging businesses have grown. This is because of new methane fields nearby. Methane is a natural gas.
Population of Three Hills
In 2021, the Town of Three Hills had a population of 3,171 people. These people lived in 1,220 homes. This number was a small change from its 2016 population of 3,212. The town covers an area of 6.74 square kilometers.
