What is Three Rivers Park?
Three Rivers Park is made up of many different projects. An organization called Riverlife helps build and manage the park. They work with property owners and community groups. The main goal is to open up the rivers for everyone to enjoy. This was not possible during Pittsburgh's Industrial Age, when factories lined the rivers.
The park offers continuous trails and green spaces. These run along the more than 13-mile riverfront loop. The park includes riverbanks, public and private land, and several bridges. Two important trail systems pass through the park: the Three Rivers Heritage Trail and the Great Allegheny Passage. The Great Allegheny Passage is a very long trail that goes through multiple states!
Meaning Behind the Park's Logo
The logo for Three Rivers Park looks like the outline of Fort Pitt. This was an old British fort from the 1700s. It was built where the Monongahela, Allegheny, and Ohio Rivers meet. This meeting point is called a confluence.
The logo shows Pittsburgh's important history. It also has designs of water and leaves. These remind us of the region's beautiful nature. You can see the logo on signs all over Three Rivers Park. There are also mile markers on the trails. They count distance from Point State Park's fountain, which is Mile 0.

How the Park Was Planned
The idea for Three Rivers Park started in 1999. Riverlife (then called Riverlife Task Force) asked for ideas from around the world. They wanted to find the best way to develop Pittsburgh's riverfronts. A company called Chan Krieger Sieniewicz won the competition.
Chan Krieger and Riverlife held many public meetings. They asked people in Pittsburgh what they wanted for the rivers. The first big plan for Three Rivers Park was shown in 2001. It was called "A Vision Plan for Pittsburgh’s Riverfronts." The City of Pittsburgh liked the plan and accepted it.
