Thury-Harcourt-le-Hom is a town in northwestern France. It is part of the Calvados area. Before 2022, it was known as Le Hom. This town was officially created on January 1, 2016. It was formed by joining several smaller towns: Thury-Harcourt, Caumont-sur-Orne, Curcy-sur-Orne, Hamars, and Saint-Martin-de-Sallen. Thury-Harcourt is the main part of the new town. The name officially changed to Thury-Harcourt-le-Hom on January 1, 2022.

About the Area

This town is located in a beautiful region called Suisse Normande. This area is known for its hills and valleys, which look a bit like the landscapes in Switzerland.

The town is made up of many small villages and hamlets. Some of these include La Hoguette, Le Val, Cropton, Martinbeau, Curcy-sur-Orne, La Bestrie, Le Quesnay, La Métairie, Le Poirier, Hamars, Saint-Silly, Paugeais, Thury-Harcourt, Les Trois Mariés, Saint-Bénin, La Fosse, Le Maizeray, and Montfort.

Two rivers flow through the town: the River Orne and the River Ajon. There are also twelve smaller streams. These include La Vallee des Vaux, The Neumer, The Aunay Douffieres, La Hoguette, La Maladrerie, La Vallee du Puceux, The Pisseux, The Val de Cropton, The Val Quebert, The Herbion, The Traspy, and La Vignonniere.

Église Saint-Sauveur de Thury-Harcourt

This is a church that was built a very long time ago. Its construction started between the 12th and 14th centuries. It was officially recognized as an important historical building in 1929.

Château d'Harcourt

This is what remains of a large castle from the 17th century. It was also recognized as a historical monument in 1927. The castle was damaged during a historical conflict in 1944.

Many interesting people were born in Thury-Harcourt-le-Hom:

  • Pierre Gringore (1470 or 1475 – 1538) was a well-known French poet and writer of plays.
  • Pierre Legardeur de Repentigny (1600 – 1648) was a military leader. He was also a "seigneur" in New France, which means he owned a large piece of land there.
  • Charles Legardeur de Tilly (1616 – 1695) was a merchant and fur trader. He was also an important official in New France.
  • Jean-Baptiste Legardeur de Repentigny (1632-1709) was an important person in the government of New France. He was a councillor.
  • Paul Héroult (1863 – 1914) was a French scientist who made important discoveries.
