Early Life and School
Tierra Whack was born in 1995 and grew up in North Philadelphia with her mother and two younger siblings. She was a quiet child who loved to write. One of her biggest inspirations was the author Dr. Seuss. She loved his rhyming books so much that she started writing her own homework in rhymes.
Her love for rhyming started with a school assignment. After getting good feedback, she kept writing rhymes and lyrics in notebooks. Soon, she began recording herself.
Whack went to The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush in Philadelphia for high school, where she studied singing. For a school talent show, she and her friends performed a song from the movie Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. Whack even added her own rap verse to the performance. Years later, she would tour with Lauryn Hill, the star of that movie.
Starting Her Music Career
Becoming Dizzle Dizz
When she was about fifteen, Whack became known as "Dizzle Dizz." She joined a freestyle rap group in Philadelphia after her mom encouraged her. She became well-known in the city for her rapping skills.
However, Whack felt she couldn't grow as an artist by only doing freestyle rap battles. She and her mother moved to Atlanta so she could finish high school. There, she worked at a car wash to save money for a computer to record her music. After two years, she returned to Philadelphia with a laptop full of songs.
When she came back to Philadelphia, she went through a difficult time. For three months, she stayed with different friends because she didn't have her own place. She believed that staying in Philadelphia was the best choice for her music career.
Working as Tierra Whack
In 2015, Whack reconnected with Kenete Simms, a music producer and sound engineer she knew. He became her collaborator and helped her learn how to produce her own music. In 2017, she signed a record deal with Interscope Records.
That same year, she released her first songs as Tierra Whack, including "... Happens." She also released "Mumbo Jumbo," a song with a very creative music video where most of the lyrics are hard to understand on purpose.
Rise to Fame
Whack World
On May 30, 2018, Whack released her debut mixtape, Whack World. The project was very unusual because it had 15 songs, and each song was exactly one minute long. She released each track on Instagram with its own short music video.
The project was a huge success with critics. Many people compared her creativity to the famous rapper Missy Elliott. The video for "Mumbo Jumbo" was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2019.
New Music and Projects
In 2019, Whack started a series called "#whackhistorymonth," where she released a new song every week for five weeks. These songs included "Only Child" and "Unemployed." Her song "Unemployed" was even featured in the video game FIFA 20.
She has worked with many other artists. She was featured on the song "Yellow Belly" by Flying Lotus and "My Power" with Beyoncé for the album The Lion King: The Gift. In 2020, she worked with Melanie Martinez on the single "Copy Cat." She also appeared on the song "T.D" with Lil Yachty, ASAP Rocky, and Tyler, the Creator, which was her first song to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In 2021, she released a single called "Link" in partnership with LEGO. The music video was inspired by ideas from a group of schoolchildren. Later that year, she released three short albums (EPs) called Rap?, Pop?, and R&B?.
On March 15, 2024, Whack released her second album, World Wide Whack. In June 2024, she performed a Tiny Desk Concert featuring songs from her new album and older fan favorites. The concert even had a special guest, the Phillie Phanatic, the mascot of the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team.
Her Unique Style
Whack started out as a battle rapper, which gave her a strong foundation for her music. However, she was inspired by artists like Lauryn Hill, Outkast, and Eminem to become a more creative and serious artist.
Her inspirations come from many places, including children's shows like Sesame Street and books like No, David!. This can be seen in the colorful and imaginative videos for Whack World. She says her ideas can come from anything, from her relationships with people to everyday objects.
Personal Life
Whack still lives in her hometown of Philadelphia, which she says keeps her grounded. She has a cat named Starkey. She is also very allergic to insects, which she made fun of in her music video for the song "Bugs Life."
