Tim Coleman's Football Journey
Tim Coleman was born in Kettering, England. He started playing football for local teams like Kettering Town. In 1901, he joined Northampton Town.
Joining Woolwich Arsenal
In 1902, Woolwich Arsenal, a team in the Second Division, signed him. Tim quickly became known for scoring lots of goals for Arsenal. His first game was on September 6, 1902, against Preston North End.
In his first season, Tim was Arsenal's top scorer with 17 goals in 30 matches. The next season, he scored even more, with 23 goals in 28 games. This helped Arsenal finish second and get promoted to the top league, the First Division.
Playing in the Top League
The 1905–06 season was tougher for Tim, as he only scored five goals. But in the next season, he scored 15 goals in 34 matches. That year, Arsenal reached the FA Cup semi-finals. Tim also played his only game for England on February 16, 1907, against Ireland.
Moving to Everton
Even though Arsenal was doing well on the field, the club had money problems. In February 1908, they sold Tim to Everton for £700. Tim had played 196 games for Arsenal and scored 84 goals.
Tim played regularly for Everton for two and a half seasons. He helped them finish second in the league in 1908–09. He scored 30 goals in 71 league games for Everton. While at Everton, Tim was one of the few players who stayed a member of the Players' Union. This union was important for protecting players' rights.
Later Clubs and Retirement
After Everton, Tim played for Sunderland (1910–11), Fulham (1911–14), and Nottingham Forest (1914–15).
When the First World War started, professional football stopped. Tim retired from the top leagues but continued to play for non-league teams. He played for Tunbridge Wells Rangers before finally retiring in 1921. After playing, he became a player-manager for the reserve team at Maidstone United. Later, Tim moved to the Netherlands and managed several clubs, helping them win promotions.
Tim Coleman passed away in November 1940 at the age of 59.
Tim Coleman's Life Outside Football
During the First World War, Tim Coleman served as a private soldier in the Middlesex Regiment. He was awarded the Military Medal in October 1918 for his bravery. In December 1916, a newspaper wrongly reported that he had been killed in action during the war.
