Timothy MacKenzie Gunn (born July 29, 1953) is an American author, teacher, and television star. He taught at the Parsons School of Design from 1982 to 2007. He was also the head of fashion design at the school. Later, he became the chief creative officer for Liz Claiborne.
Tim Gunn is best known as the helpful mentor to designers on the TV show Project Runway. He was on the show for 16 seasons. His popularity led to two other shows: Tim Gunn's Guide to Style and Under the Gunn. He has also written five books. Gunn is an executive producer and mentor for young designers on Project Runway: Junior. He also voices Baileywick, a castle helper, in the Disney Junior show Sofia the First.

Early Life and Education
Tim Gunn was born in Washington, D.C.. His father worked for the FBI. He wrote speeches for J. Edgar Hoover. Tim Gunn went to the Corcoran College of Art and Design. He earned a degree in sculpture.
A Career in Fashion and TV
After working as an admissions director, Gunn started at Parsons in 1982. He became the head of the Fashion Design Department in 2000. People said he "re-energized the curriculum for the 21st century."
Project Runway and Other Shows
Gunn first appeared on Project Runway in 2004. He is famous for his catchphrase, "Make it work." In 2013, Gunn won a Primetime Emmy Award for being an outstanding host.
His show, Tim Gunn's Guide to Style, started in 2007 on the Bravo network. On this show, Gunn gave fashion advice. It ran for two seasons. In 2014, Gunn hosted Under the Gunn on Lifetime. He is also an executive producer and mentor for Project Runway: Junior.
Gunn has also appeared on other TV shows. He played a fashion reporter on Ugly Betty in 2007. He also guest-starred as himself on Drop Dead Diva in 2009. He was a guest star on How I Met Your Mother and Gossip Girl.
New Ventures and Books
Gunn left Parsons in 2007. He joined Liz Claiborne, Inc. as their chief creative officer. In April 2007, Gunn released his book, A Guide to Quality, Taste and Style. He wrote it with Kate Moloney. The city of Palm Desert, California, even declared April 27, 2007, as Timothy M. Gunn Day. He also received honors from other cities. Between 2010 and 2015, Gunn published four more books.
In 2009, Gunn gave a speech at the Corcoran College of Art and Design. He also received an honorary doctorate degree. In 2018, it was announced that Gunn and Heidi Klum would leave Project Runway. They moved to Amazon Video to host a new fashion show called Making the Cut. This show released its third season in 2022.
Appearances in Other Media
In 2007, a special "reality chamber opera" about Tim Gunn premiered. It was called "Tim Gunn's Podcast." Gunn also appeared in a comic book series called Models Inc. by Marvel Comics. In the comic, he even wore the Iron Man armor! He also appeared in a skit at the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards.
Personal Life

Tim Gunn lives in Manhattan. He is a strong supporter of animal rights. He does not like clothing made from animal fur. In 2008, he narrated a video for the group PETA. The video showed how rabbits are farmed for their fur in China. He called the treatment of these animals "terribly irresponsible."
Awards and Honors
In June 2020, Tim Gunn was named one of fifty heroes by Queerty. This was in honor of the 50th anniversary of the first LGBTQ Pride parade. He was recognized for helping lead the nation toward equality and acceptance for all people.
