Tina Gharavi (Persian: تینا غروی born on July 1, 1972) is a talented artist, director, and screenwriter. She was born in Tehran, Iran, and later became a British citizen. Tina Gharavi is known for her work that explores ideas of fairness and different cultures. She has even been nominated for big awards like the BAFTA and Sundance.

Early Life and Education
Tina Gharavi was born in Tehran, the capital city of Iran. She went to high school in New Jersey, USA. She first studied to become a painter. However, after seeing how movies were made on a Hollywood set, she decided to work in the film industry instead.
Career Highlights
Tina Gharavi's first short film was called Closer. It was chosen to be shown at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival, which is a very important film festival. After that, she made a documentary called Mother/Country. This film was about her trip back to her mother's house in Iran, 23 years after the Islamic Revolution. It was shown on TV in the UK.
In 2010, Tina was picked as one of nine new directors to get special training. This was part of a program called Guiding Lights, run by the UK Film Council.
Directing TV Shows and Films
In 2011, Tina Gharavi directed two episodes of The Tunnel. This was a British TV show based on a Danish-Swedish show called The Bridge. She also directed two episodes of Ackley Bridge for Channel 4.
Her first full-length movie, I Am Nasrine, came out in 2013. This film was nominated for a BAFTA award for being an outstanding first movie. A famous actor, Sir Ben Kingsley, who supported the film, said it was "an important and much-needed film." Peter Bradshaw, a film critic for The Guardian newspaper, gave the movie four stars. He said it was "a valuable debut" and was filmed with a "fluent kind of poetry."
In April 2023, Tina Gharavi directed the Netflix series Queen Cleopatra. This series caused some discussion because a Black actress, Adele James, was cast as Cleopatra. Tina Gharavi spoke about this decision. The series was distributed by Netflix and produced by Jada Pinkett Smith's company, Westbrook Studios.
More recently, in 2024, it was announced that Tina Gharavi would direct The Shah, the Spy and the Madman. This is a documentary series about a historical event in Iran from 1953. In December 2024, she was also announced as the main producer for The Fox. This is an international crime thriller TV series based on popular detective books from Iceland.
Teaching and Fellowships
Tina Gharavi is also a senior lecturer at the University of Newcastle. She teaches about Film & Digital Media there. She earned her PhD from the university. In 2017, she was invited to join the BAFTA Academy. She also received a special award from the MIT Documentary Lab in Boston. There, she is working on her next big film project, called The Good Iranian, with Film4.
Bridge + Tunnel Productions
In 1998, Tina Gharavi started her own film company called Bridge + Tunnel. This company creates different types of media. Its main goal is to tell stories from groups of people who are often not heard or seen in the media.
