What's in a Name? The Meaning of Tioga
The name "Tioga" comes from the Native American tribes who lived in this area long ago. It means "at the forks," which likely refers to where rivers or paths split. Different Iroquois tribes had similar words for this idea. For example, the Oneida called it Te-ah-o-ge, and the Mohawk used Te-yo-ge-ga. The Cayuga said Da-o-ga, and the Seneca used Da-yo-o-geh.
