Tioga Sedge
What is the Tioga Sedge?
The Tioga sedge is a special plant that grows in clumps. Its stems can reach up to 75 mm (about 3 inches) long. It has narrow leaves with rough edges that are shaped like a sickle.
This sedge is quite similar to another plant called Carex capillaris. Some scientists even think the Tioga sedge might be a special type of that plant.
Where Does it Live?
This unique plant only grows in California, USA. You can find it in the Sierra Nevada mountains, specifically in Mono County. It likes to grow in wet meadows and next to lakes.
The Tioga sedge lives at very high elevations, from about 3,090 to 3,310 meters (10,140 to 10,860 feet) above sea level. This makes its home very specific and special.
Why is it Special?
The Tioga sedge is considered very rare. There are only four small groups of these plants known to exist. This means it's important to protect them so they don't disappear.
