Tiroran is a small village and a beautiful country estate on the Isle of Mull in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It's located near Kilfinchen Bay and sits on the northern side of Loch Scridain. The main building, Tiroran House, is part of a small estate that now offers lovely holiday homes. Tiroran is also home to the Whitetail gin distillery, which opened in 2020. This small estate, covering about 60 acres, has been owned by the Mackay/Munro family since 2004.
A Look Back in Time
In the late 1700s, Tiroran House was connected to the McKinnon family. Some family members who lived here later served in the American War in 1775.
Later, in the Victorian era, the Tiroran Estate belonged to Maude Cheape. She was known as the "Squire of Bentley." Over the years, the estate was sold several times.
In the late 1900s, Sue and Robin Blockey bought parts of the estate. They turned the main Tiroran House into a hotel. Colin and Jane Tindal bought it in 1997. Then, Laurence and Katie Mackay became the owners in 2004.
Tiroran is special because it's home to the first distillery on the Isle of Mull in over 200 years! It opened in 2017 and makes the island's first gin, called Whitetail Gin. You can learn more about the area's history at the Pennyghae in the Past museum, which is located in Tiroran.
Exploring Tiroran's Geography
The village of Tiroran is on the southwest side of the Isle of Mull. It's located on the northern shores of Loch Scridain, just off the B8035 road.
The area around Tiroran House is filled with beautiful Victorian woodland gardens and forests. There's also a large Tiroran Forest, which is owned by the local community.
A river, called Alt Orian, flows through Tiroran. It runs down to an old Victorian trout pond and a waterfall on the Tiroran Estate. The Seilisdeir, also known as the Kilfinichen River, is nearby. It's about 3.5 miles long. Both rivers flow into the northern part of Loch Scridain at Kilfinichen Bay. People can catch salmon in the river. Permits to fish are available from the Pennyghael Post Office. To the northeast of Tiroran, you can find Ben More, a famous mountain.
Tiroran House Estate
Tiroran House is a country estate that has won many awards. It includes several holiday properties. The estate covers 60 acres of gardens and grounds.
The main house used to be a Victorian hunting lodge. It was owned by Maude Cheape, the "Squire of Bentley." The house is surrounded by neat gardens, woodlands, and glen walks. These paths lead down to the private shores of Loch Scridain.
Tiroran is now a small, special estate. The Mackay/Munro family has owned it since 2004. From this estate, the family runs different businesses. These include holiday accommodation and the distillery.
