History of Tessellis
Tiscali S.p.A. began in January 1998 in Cagliari, Italy. It was founded by Renato Soru. The company got its name from a mountain in Sardinia where an ancient village was found.
In 1999, a part of the company called Tiscali Italia was created. This part focused on services within Italy.
Making Internet Accessible
Starting in March 1999, Tiscali offered something called "Tiscali Free Net." This meant customers didn't have to pay a monthly fee to use the internet. They only paid for the time they were actually online. This idea helped make the internet much more available to many people in Italy. Other internet companies soon followed this trend.
New Services and Growth
In 2009, Tiscali launched Tiscali Mobile. This service allowed people to use their mobile phones through Tiscali, even though Tiscali used another company's network.
In 2012, Tiscali started three new companies:
- Veesible S.r.l.: This company handled selling advertising space.
- indoona S.r.l.: This company worked on creating a mobile app for instant messaging, like texting with friends.
- istella S.r.l.: This company focused on building its own search engine, similar to Google.
Joining Forces with Linkem
In 2021, Tiscali S.p.A. and Linkem S.p.A. decided to join together. This was a big step for both companies. By August 2022, the merger was complete. Linkem became the main owner of Tiscali S.p.A.
After this merger, in January 2023, the main company changed its name to Tessellis S.p.A.. However, it still uses the well-known names Tiscali and Linkem for its services.
In October 1999, Tiscali offered its shares to the public for the first time. This is called an initial public offering (IPO). It meant that people could buy small parts of the company. At first, the shares were quite valuable. However, by 2012, their price had dropped a lot.
For a few years, from 2001 to 2005, Tiscali's shares were also traded on the French Stock Exchange.
Selling Parts of the Company
Over the years, Tiscali sold off many of its smaller branches in different countries. This was so the company could focus more on its main areas, especially Italy and the United Kingdom. For example:
- In 2004, Tiscali sold its branches in Austria, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Belgium.
- In 2005, it sold its Danish and French internet companies.
- In 2007, Tiscali sold its German business operations.
- In 2009, Tiscali sold its international network part, called Tinet. It also sold its UK branch to a company called Carphone Warehouse. This UK service later became known as TalkTalk.
In 2016, Tiscali also joined with Aria, an Italian company that provided wireless internet.
Services Offered
Tessellis, through its Tiscali brand, offers many services. These include broadband Internet access and phone services. For a short time, Tiscali also offered TV services in Italy and the UK. The UK TV service was later taken over by TalkTalk.
Tiscali used to have a large network called Tiscali International Network. This network provided internet connections and other services to other businesses around the world. It was known for being a very important part of the global internet. This network was sold in 2009.
Tiscali also ran websites for each country it operated in. These websites offered things like Webmail (email through a website), news, videos, and online chat rooms.
The company even had its own Web browser that came with its internet packages. This browser used parts of Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
