The Adventure Begins
This movie is about 6-year-old twin sisters named Sarah and Julie. They are played by Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen. They are sweet but also a bit mischievous! Their mom, Rhonda (Cynthia Geary), is very busy with her job. The girls hear her say she needs a "vacation" because they are a "handful."
The twins decide to help their mom get what she wants. They pack their bags and hop on their bikes. Their plan is to ride all the way to their grandmother's house for Christmas. But there's a problem: they aren't allowed to cross the street by themselves!
A Bus Ride and a New Friend
A city bus pulls up, and the clever twins sneak onto it through the back door. On the bus, an older lady tells them the bus only goes around the city. She explains that Edgemont, where their grandmother lives, is many hours away.
After getting off the bus downtown, Sarah and Julie spot Eddie (J. Eddie Peck). Eddie is a delivery man who likes their mom. They sneak into the back of his truck, thinking he will take them to their great-grandmother's house. But Sarah really needs to use the bathroom, so they have to show themselves to Eddie.
Eddie doesn't really like kids at first. But he soon starts to enjoy having the girls around. He notices he gets bigger tips when they help him deliver packages! He even buys a lottery ticket and uses their birthdate (6-13-19-8-7) as his numbers.
Mom Finds Out
Meanwhile, the girls' babysitter realizes they are missing. She quickly tells Rhonda. Rhonda closes her convenience store in a panic. She rushes home to check the house and calls the police.
While Rhonda is trying to report her missing children, Eddie calls. He tells her he has the girls and explains how they ended up with him. Rhonda says she will come pick them up. But Eddie promises to watch over them. He says he will bring them back at the end of his delivery route. However, he tells the girls he will take them to Grandma's if they keep helping him.
Unexpected Trouble
After finishing his deliveries, Eddie brings Sarah and Julie home. He even accidentally says that adults sometimes say anything to get kids to go along with them. He tells the girls to get their suitcases from the back of his truck. He asks them to meet him at the house entrance.
But as Eddie steps out of his truck, two people attack him! These two, Harvey and Shirley (Jerry Van Dyke and Rhea Perlman), steal his truck. The girls are still inside! When Harvey and Shirley find the twins, they decide they can get money by holding them. Shirley calls Rhonda and asks for $10,000. She calls it a "reward." She warns Rhonda not to tell the police. Shirley says they will meet at the ice rink in Edgemont. Rhonda must wear a red hat.
A Race Against Time
Harvey starts to like the girls. He asks Shirley why they never had kids. Shirley says it's because they are too busy with their "work." Eddie and Rhonda decide to get the money. They open and sell the packages Eddie was supposed to deliver. They manage to get almost all the money needed. Eddie even gives Rhonda a red cowgirl hat from his collection.
But pawnshops start to notice the stolen items. They report it to Detective Gremp (Stuart Margolin) and his team. The police think Eddie and Rhonda are the ones causing trouble. They get a warrant for their arrest.
The Grand Finale
Everyone ends up at the skating rink in Edgemont. Eddie and Rhonda argue, and so do Harvey and Shirley. When Harvey tells the girls what he and Shirley plan to do, the twins run off again.
They visit Santa Claus, who is in a carriage that looks like a sleigh. The carriage is pulled by horses dressed as reindeer. The twins are tired of Harvey and Shirley bothering them. So, they take control of the carriage! They hope the "reindeer" will take them to Grandma's.
Midway through their ride, they realize the "reindeer" are just horses. They also realize they are in danger because they can't stop the horses. They are heading fast towards the edge of a steep ravine! Eddie quickly gets another horse and chases after them. His love for cowboys helps him try a daring rescue. He manages to stop the carriage just inches from the edge! He leads the girls to safety. They don't even realize they have stopped right outside Rhonda's Grandma Mimi's house (Florence Paterson).
Happy Endings
Just as things calm down, and Eddie and Rhonda share a hug, Detective Gremp and his officer arrive. They put handcuffs on Eddie and Rhonda. Eddie and Rhonda try to explain what happened. But Gremp still thinks they are the ones who caused all the trouble. Harvey feels bad for Eddie and Rhonda. Shirley tries to make them run away. But Harvey's good side wins. He tells the truth about everything. Harvey and Shirley are then taken away. Harvey tells Shirley he will be the "worst convict possible" if they ever get out.
After some talking, Gremp agrees to let Eddie, Rhonda, and the girls go back to the city with him. This way, Eddie can be on time for the Win-O-Lotto lottery. He has a chance to win 1.3 million dollars! They arrive and show their ticket to the lottery hosts (Bob Saget and Lori Loughlin). Eddie promises to share his winnings with Rhonda and the girls. The girls spin the prize wheel for him. By pure luck, he wins the jackpot!
Afterward, they return all the packages to their rightful owners. Everyone is happy spending Christmas together.
