Toby Kane (born 30 December 1986) is an amazing Australian Paralympian. He is famous for winning two bronze medals in para alpine skiing. He won his first bronze medal at the 2006 Winter Paralympics in Torino, Italy. His second bronze medal came at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia.

Toby was invited to join the Australian Winter Paralympic Development team when he was only 11 years old. At 19, he was the youngest member of the Australian team in Torino. He was also honored to be Australia's flag bearer. He carried the flag at the closing ceremony in Torino and the opening ceremony in Vancouver. At the end of the Sochi Games, Toby received a special honor. He and Dutch snowboarder Bibian Mentel-Spee won the Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award. This award celebrates athletes who show outstanding performance and overcome challenges.

Toby Kane was born in Sydney, Australia, on December 30, 1986. He is the oldest son of Sally and Steve Kane. He also has an older brother named Tim. When Toby was two years old, he had an accident. He lost his lower right leg after being hit by a car.

Toby started skiing because his aunt and uncle owned a ski lodge. Their lodge was in the Snowy Mountains at a place called Smiggin Holes, New South Wales. Besides being a great athlete, Toby is also very smart. He earned a Bachelor of Medical Science degree. He also studied to become a doctor, working towards a double degree in medicine and surgery. He studied at the University of Notre Dame Australia in Sydney.

Toby's Skiing Career

Toby's talent for skiing was noticed early on. He was skiing at Smiggin Holes, New South Wales when he was just 11. That's when he was invited to join the Australian Winter Paralympic Development team.

2006 Winter Paralympics

At 19, Toby was the youngest Australian team member at the 2006 Winter Paralympics in Torino. He competed in the LW2 category. He won a bronze medal in the men's super G event. This was a big achievement, following in the footsteps of famous Australian skier Michael Milton. Toby also competed in other events. He finished 9th in downhill and 16th in slalom. He did not finish the giant slalom event.

2010 Winter Paralympics

Toby continued his Paralympic journey at the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver. He competed in five men's events. He placed tenth in downhill and giant slalom. He finished eleventh in slalom. He did not finish in the super combined and super G events. Toby had the special honor of being Australia's flag bearer twice. He carried the flag at the closing ceremony in Torino. He also carried it at the opening ceremony in Vancouver.

World Championships and World Cup

Toby won another bronze medal at the 2004 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships. This was in the men's super G LW2 event in Wildschönau, Austria. After taking a break from the sport, he returned in 2011. He competed at the 2011 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships in Sestriere, Italy. There, he won a bronze medal in the slalom event. This was after several close fourth-place finishes in other races.

During the 2011/12 IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup season, he won another bronze medal in giant slalom. In the 2012/13 season, he had an amazing run. He won one gold, two silver, and one bronze medal at the 2012 North America Cup. He then followed this with another bronze in the World Cup series for giant slalom.

Toby was supported by the Australian Institute of Sport and New South Wales Institute of Sport. He received scholarships from 2002 to 2014. In 2011, he was given a Sport Achievement Award from the Australian Institute of Sport.

2014 Winter Paralympics and Retirement

Toby competed in five events at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi. He won a bronze medal in the men's super G. This was Australia's first medal at the Sochi Games. After winning his medal, Toby announced he would retire from skiing. He wanted to end his career on a high note. He finished fourth in the men's slalom standing. He also placed sixth in the men's downhill standing. He did not finish in two other events.

At the end of the Sochi Games, Toby and Dutch snowboarder Bibian Mentel-Spee received the Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award. This award is given to athletes who show great performance and overcome challenges. After the 2014 Paralympics, Toby officially retired. He decided to focus on his career in medicine.
