Toby Kane is an amazing Australian Paralympian athlete. He was born on December 30, 1986. Toby won two bronze medals in the men's Super-G Standing event at the Winter Paralympics. His first medal was at the 2006 Winter Paralympics in Torino, Italy. He won his second bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia.

Toby was invited to join the Australian Winter Paralympic Development team when he was only 11 years old. He was the youngest member of the Australian team in Torino at 19. Toby had the special honor of being Australia's flag bearer. He carried the flag at the closing ceremony in Torino and at the opening ceremony in Vancouver. At the end of the Sochi Games, Toby and Dutch snowboarder Bibian Mentel-Spee won the Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award. This award is given at every Paralympic Games for great performances and for overcoming challenges.

Toby Kane was born in Sydney, Australia. He is the oldest son of Sally and Steve Kane. He also has an older brother named Tim. When Toby was two years old, he had an accident. He lost his lower right leg after being hit by a car.

Toby started skiing because his aunt and uncle owned a chalet. This chalet was in the Snowy Mountains at Smiggin Holes, New South Wales. He later studied at the University of Notre Dame Australia in Sydney. He earned a Bachelor of Medical Science degree. He also studied for a double degree in medicine and surgery.

Toby's Skiing Career

Toby's talent for skiing was noticed early on. He was skiing at Smiggin Holes, New South Wales when he was invited to join the Australian Winter Paralympic Development team. This happened when he was just 11 years old.

First Paralympic Games

At 19, Toby was the youngest Australian team member at the 2006 Winter Paralympics in Torino. He was classified as LW2. He won a bronze medal in the men's Super-G event. This was a big achievement for him. He also competed in other events:

Vancouver and World Championships

At the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver, Toby competed in five men's events:

  • Downhill: He finished tenth.
  • Giant Slalom: He placed tenth.
  • Slalom: He finished eleventh.
  • Super Combined: He did not finish.
  • Super-G: He did not finish.

Toby had the honor of being Australia's flag bearer at two Winter Paralympic Games. He carried the flag at the closing ceremony in Torino. He also carried it at the opening ceremony in Vancouver.

Toby won a bronze medal in the men's Super-G LW2 at the 2004 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships. This event took place in Wildschönau, Austria. After taking a break from the sport, he returned to compete. He won another bronze medal in the slalom at the 2011 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships. This was in Sestriere, Italy. He had placed fourth in other races, which was a bit frustrating.

During the 2011/12 IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup season, he won another bronze medal in the Giant Slalom. In the 2012/13 season, he had a very successful year. He won one gold, two silver, and one bronze medal at the 2012 North America Cup. He then won a bronze medal in the Giant Slalom in the World Cup series.

Toby was supported by the Australian Institute of Sport and New South Wales Institute of Sport. He received scholarships from 2002 to 2014. In 2011, he also received a Sport Achievement Award from the Australian Institute of Sport.

Sochi and Retirement

Toby competed in five events at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi. He won a bronze medal in the men's Super-G. He finished behind Russia's Alexey Bugaev and Austria's Matthias Lanzinger. This was Australia's first medal at the Sochi Games.

After winning his bronze medal, Toby announced his retirement. He decided to end his skiing career on a high note after the Games. He went on to finish fourth in the men's Slalom Standing. He also placed sixth in the men's Downhill Standing. He did not finish two other events.

Near the end of the Sochi Games, Toby and Dutch snowboarder Bibian Mentel-Spee were recognized. They won the Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award. This award celebrates athletes who show great performance and overcome challenges.

Toby officially retired after the 2014 Paralympics. He planned to focus on his career in medicine.
