Meet Todd Brook: A Little River with a Big Journey
Todd Brook might be small, but it plays a vital role in the local environment. It helps carry water across the land and eventually joins a much larger river. Understanding its journey helps us appreciate how all parts of nature are connected.
Where Does Todd Brook Begin?
Every river has a starting point, and for Todd Brook, it's high up on a hill called Shining Tor. This spot is right on the border between Cheshire and Derbyshire. Imagine tiny trickles of water coming together to form the very beginning of the brook! The source is about 559 meters (or 1,834 feet) above sea level.
Todd Brook's Winding Path
From Shining Tor, Todd Brook begins its journey, flowing northwards. It travels through the eastern part of Cheshire, passing by some interesting places.
- It flows near Jenkin Chapel, a historic little church.
- It goes past Windgather Rocks, which are popular for climbing.
- It also passes by the village of Kettleshulme.
After this, the brook turns east. For a short distance, it forms the natural border between Cheshire and Derbyshire. Then, it flows into Toddbrook Reservoir in Derbyshire. A reservoir is like a big lake made by people to store water.
Joining a Bigger River
After leaving the reservoir, Todd Brook continues its journey. It eventually flows into the River Goyt in a town called Whaley Bridge. This is where Todd Brook's journey ends, as its water becomes part of the larger River Goyt. The River Goyt then flows on to join other rivers.
Keeping Todd Brook Healthy
Just like we need to stay healthy, rivers also need to be clean and healthy. The Environment Agency checks the health of rivers in England. In 2014, Todd Brook's water quality was checked. Its classification changed from "good" to "moderate." This means that while it's still okay, there's always work to be done to keep our rivers as clean as possible for all the plants and animals that live there.
