Togo is a small, quiet community in Minnesota, United States. It's not a big city or town, but a special kind of place called an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city does. Togo is located in Itasca County, within Carpenter Township.

You can find Togo between the towns of Cook and Effie. It's right where two main roads, State Highway 1 and State Highway 65, meet up. Another road, County Road 22, is also nearby.

Togo has a fun motto: "Got to go to Togo!" It's located inside the beautiful George Washington State Forest in Itasca County, which means it's surrounded by nature.

Exploring Togo's Location

Togo is about 32 miles (51 km) north of Nashwauk. It's also about 25 miles (40 km) west of Cook and 25 miles (40 km) east of Effie.

Nearby Towns and Counties

Other places close to Togo include Bear River, Rauch, and Celina. The borders of three different counties — Itasca, Saint Louis, and Koochiching — are very close to Togo. Bearville Township is also in the area.

Togo is a quiet, remote area. Not many people live there.

Life in the Togo Community

Togo used to have its own post office and a special ZIP code. However, that post office has now closed. Today, mail for Togo is handled by the post office in Cook, Minnesota, using zip code 55723.

The building that was once the old post office and store is now a home.

Water and Travel

Togo is known for its two special water wells. These are called artesian wells, which means water flows up from deep underground naturally. Anyone can use these wells. One of them is right at the main crossroads where State Highways 1 and 65 meet.

Even though Togo doesn't have a grocery store or its own post office, it does have a small private airport.

Outdoor Adventures

If you love snowmobiling, Togo is a great place! It connects to hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails. There's a special path called the "Togo spur" near the junction of Highways 1 and 65. This path helps guide snowmobile riders to the trails.

Old School and Local Business

The old Togo Elementary School building is now a home. It also has a small sawmill that is still working.

Thistledew Camp

The Minnesota Department of Corrections runs a special facility in Togo called Thistledew Camp. It started in 1955. This camp is a "boot camp" for adult male offenders. It's part of a program designed to help them learn new skills and change their lives. About 60 people work at Thistledew Camp.

Famous People from Togo

Some interesting people have lived in Togo. One is Jamie Nelson, who has won the John Beargrease Dog Sled Race four times. He has also competed four times in the famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

Another notable person is Reverend ThornBerg, who was one of the people who helped start the township. The ThornBerg family has lived in the area since the early 1900s.
