A Look at Toivakka's Past
The area of Toivakka has a long history. Records show that a farm named Toivakka existed as far back as 1540. The name Toivakka comes from an old family name from the Savonian region.
For a long time, Toivakka was part of a larger village called Leppävesi, which belonged to the Laukaa area. Later, in 1561, it became part of the Rautalampi church parish. Laukaa then became its own separate church parish in 1628, and Toivakka stayed connected to it.
In 1871, Toivakka moved to a new area called Jyväskylän maalaiskunta, which had just separated from Laukaa a few years earlier. Finally, Toivakka became its own separate church parish in 1909. The very next year, in 1910, it officially became an independent municipality, just like it is today.
Toivakka's Sister City
Toivakka has a special connection with another place far away. It is "twinned" with Kambja Parish in Estonia. This means they have a friendly relationship and often share ideas and culture.
