How Toluca Began
In 1887, farmers like William Twist asked the railroad to make Toluca a regular stop. The railroad agreed to their request. Soon after, a company from Chicago helped build a grain elevator. This elevator was managed by Thomas Colehower. He also built the very first house in the part of Toluca now called "Old Town."

Growth and Change
Toluca continued to grow, reaching about 6,000 people by 1907. Many immigrants from countries like Poland, Italy, and Lithuania came to Toluca to work in the coal mines. However, by 1924, the coal mines were no longer making money and had to close. This caused many people to leave, and the city's population became much smaller.
