Thomas P. Tiffany (born December 30, 1957) is an American businessman and politician. He is currently a U.S. Representative for Wisconsin's 7th congressional district. He won a special election in 2020 to take this role. Before this, he was a member of the Republican Party. He served for seven years in the Wisconsin Senate and two years in the State Assembly. These roles represented the northeast part of Wisconsin.

Early Life and Education

Tom Tiffany was born in Wabasha, Minnesota. He grew up on a dairy farm near Elmwood, Pierce County, Wisconsin. He had five brothers and two sisters.

He finished high school at Elmwood High School in 1976. In 1980, he earned his college degree. He got a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in agricultural economics from the University of Wisconsin–River Falls.

Career Before Politics

Before becoming a politician, Tom Tiffany worked in business. He managed the petroleum part of a farm cooperative in Plainview, Minnesota. In 1988, he moved to Minocqua, Wisconsin. There, he managed petroleum distribution for Zenker Oil Company.

Since 1991, he and his wife, Chris, have run a boat tour business. This business is located on the Willow Flowage.

Early Political Career

Tom Tiffany served as the Town Supervisor for Little Rice, Wisconsin. He held this position from 2009 to 2013. He is also a chosen member of the Oneida County Economic Development Corporation.

In 2004 and 2008, he ran for the 12th district in the Wisconsin State Senate. He lost both times in close elections. In 2010, he ran for the Wisconsin State Assembly. He won the primary election and then defeated his opponent, Jay Schmelling.

In 2012, Tiffany decided not to run for the Assembly again. Instead, he ran for the Senate once more. He won this election against Democrat Susan Sommer.

Serving in the U.S. House of Representatives

Tom Tiffany became a U.S. Representative on May 19, 2020. He represents Wisconsin's 7th congressional district.

Winning Elections

2020 Special Election

The previous Representative, Sean Duffy, left his job in September 2019. He resigned because his youngest daughter had a heart condition. Tom Tiffany announced he would run in a special election to take his place.

A special election is held to fill a political office that has become empty before the next regular election. Tiffany won the Republican primary election in February 2020. He then won the special election in May 2020. He defeated Tricia Zunker, an attorney from Wausau.

2020 General Election

Later in 2020, Tom Tiffany ran for reelection in the regular November election. He faced Tricia Zunker again. Tiffany won this election with 60.7% of the votes.

Key Actions and Votes

In December 2020, Tom Tiffany was one of many Republican members of the House. He supported a legal document related to a lawsuit about the 2020 presidential election results. The U.S. Supreme Court decided not to hear the case.

Tiffany was also among the House members who objected to counting some electoral votes. These votes were from Arizona and Pennsylvania in the 2020 presidential election.

In June 2021, Tiffany was one of 14 House Republicans who voted against a law. This law would make June 19, known as Juneteenth, a federal holiday.

Iraq Policy

In June 2021, Tom Tiffany was one of 49 House Republicans. He voted to end a law that allowed military force against Iraq. This law was called the AUMF.

Taiwan Relations

Tiffany believes the United States should recognize the Republic of China (Taiwan) as a country. In 2023, he wrote an article saying the U.S. should end its "tired charade." Since he was elected, Tiffany has introduced laws in every session. These laws aim to create official diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

In 2024, Tiffany introduced laws to support Taiwan's full involvement in the World Health Organization. He also introduced a law to stop the State Department from limiting talks with Taiwanese officials. Both of these laws were passed by Congress.

Syria Policy

In 2023, Tiffany was among 47 Republicans who voted for a resolution. This resolution asked President Joe Biden to remove U.S. troops from Syria. It suggested this should happen within 180 days.

Russia Policy

On March 19, 2024, Tiffany voted against a House resolution. This resolution condemned Russia's actions during the Russo-Ukrainian War. He was one of nine Republicans to vote this way.

Fiscal Responsibility Act

Tiffany was among 71 Republicans who voted against the final approval of the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023. This act was about the government's spending and debt.
