Harald Anton "Toni" Schumacher (born on March 6, 1954) is a famous German former footballer. He played as a goalkeeper. He won many titles with his clubs. He also played for West Germany.
Schumacher helped his country win the 1980 European Championship. He also played in two World Cup finals. These were in 1982 and 1986. He was named German Footballer of the Year twice. This happened in 1984 and 1986.
Playing for Clubs
Starting His Career
Toni Schumacher started playing for the main team of 1. FC Köln when he was 19. He played for this club from 1972 to 1987. He played in 213 Bundesliga matches in a row. This was from 1977 to 1983.
Top Goalkeeper Years
For many years, Toni was seen as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He was always the first choice for his country's team. In 1978, he helped 1. FC Köln win two big titles. They won the Bundesliga league title and the DFB-Pokal cup.
Winning the DFB-Pokal
A year before, in 1977, he also led Köln to win the DFB-Pokal. This was the club's first major trophy in nine years. He played in two more DFB-Pokal finals. They won in 1983. Football journalists in Germany voted him the best German Footballer of the Year in 1984 and 1986.

West Germany Team
Toni Schumacher played 76 games for the West Germany national team. This was between 1979 and 1986. He played in 15 World Cup qualifying games. He also played in 14 World Cup matches.
European and World Cup Success
He won the 1980 European Championship with West Germany. They beat Belgium 2–1 in the final. He also reached two World Cup finals. They lost both of them. In 1982, they lost to Italy 3–1. In 1986, they lost to Argentina 3–2.
Penalty Shootout Heroics
In the 1982 World Cup, during a semi-final game, he saved two penalties. This was in the first penalty shootout ever in a World Cup final tournament. West Germany won that game. In the 1986 quarter-final, he saved two more penalties. This helped West Germany move forward again.
Life After Playing
Coaching Roles
After his playing career, Toni Schumacher became a coach. He worked as a goalkeeping coach for several clubs. These included Schalke 04, Bayern Munich, and Borussia Dortmund. He also managed SC Fortuna Köln for a short time.
Club Leadership
On April 23, 2012, Schumacher was chosen as the vice president of 1. FC Köln. He worked on the sports side of the club. His time as vice president ended in September 2019.
His Autobiography
In 1987, Toni Schumacher wrote a book about his life called Anpfiff. This means "kick-off" in German. The book was published in many countries. After the book came out, Schumacher was no longer part of the Germany national team. He also left his long-time club, 1. FC Köln.
