Tony McKegney: Hockey Star
Early Life and Career Beginnings
Tony McKegney was born in Montreal, Quebec. He was adopted and grew up in Sarnia, Ontario. As a teenager, he played Jr. 'B' hockey in Sarnia. He followed in the footsteps of his older brother, Ian, who was also a hockey star.
In 1978, Tony was picked 32nd overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the NHL Draft. Before joining the NHL, he had a contract with a team in the now-closed World Hockey Association (WHA). However, that deal did not work out. This led Tony to join the NHL instead.
NHL Journey and Milestones
Tony McKegney played five seasons with the Buffalo Sabres. On June 8, 1983, he was traded to the Quebec Nordiques. He also played for several other NHL teams during his career. These included the Minnesota North Stars, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Detroit Red Wings, and Chicago Blackhawks.
Tony was a strong scorer. He scored over 300 goals in his career. A big highlight was the 1987-88 season when he scored 40 goals. This made him the first Black player in NHL history to reach that milestone. He also had 78 points in one season. This was the highest total for a Black player until Jarome Iginla broke it in 2001-2002. Tony had nine seasons where he scored 20 or more goals. He played over 900 games in his career.
After the NHL
After playing his last NHL season with the Chicago Blackhawks in 1990-91, Tony went to play in Italy. He played for HC Varese. He also played a few games for the Canadian National Team.
In 1992, Tony hoped to return to the NHL. Terry Crisp, who had coached him on the Canadian National Team, became the coach for the new Tampa Bay Lightning team. Tony wanted to be a veteran leader for the team. However, he did not make the roster. He then played 23 games for the San Diego Gulls before retiring from playing.
Today, Tony McKegney still works with hockey. He does work for the alumni associations of the Red Wings and the Buffalo Sabres.
