Tony McKegney's Hockey Journey
Tony McKegney was chosen by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1978 NHL Draft. He was the 32nd player picked overall. He played with the Sabres for five seasons. Later, he was traded to the Quebec Nordiques in 1983.
Tony was born in Montreal, Quebec. He was adopted and grew up in Sarnia, Ontario. He started playing junior hockey in Sarnia, just like his older brother, Ian. This was the most points ever recorded by a Black player until Jarome Iginla passed it in 2001-2002. Tony had nine seasons where he scored 20 goals or more. He played over 900 games in his career.
After playing his last NHL season with the Chicago Blackhawks in 1991, Tony McKegney played hockey in Italy for a season with HC Varese. He also played a few games for the Canadian National Team.
Tony hoped to return to the NHL with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1992. However, he did not make the team. He then played 23 games for the San Diego Gulls before he retired from playing hockey.
Today, Tony McKegney sometimes works with the alumni associations for the Detroit Red Wings and the Buffalo Sabres. These groups are made up of former players.
