Understanding Torture and the War on Terror
The United States and other nations involved in the War on Terror have faced questions about using harsh methods to get information from people suspected of terrorism. Two well-known situations involving the U.S. are the events at Abu Ghraib prison and Guantánamo Bay.
What Happened at Abu Ghraib Prison?
Starting in 2004, there were reports of prisoners being treated badly at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. A newspaper called The New Yorker published an article in May 2004. This article included pictures taken by soldiers who were there. The United States Department of Defense looked into these reports in an investigation called the Taguba Report. This report showed that the military had been looking into the abuse since 2003. In the end, nine soldiers were removed from the military and sent to prison for their actions.
The Situation at Guantanamo Bay
Human rights groups, like Amnesty International, have stated that agents from the CIA used harsh ways to get information from prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. Guantanamo Bay is a U.S. naval base located in Cuba. Because of these concerns about how prisoners were treated, President Barack Obama ordered that the base should be closed down.
