The Tower Petroleum Building is a very old and important Skyscraper in Downtown Dallas, Texas. It is also known as The Tower Building. This tall building is located at 1907 Elm Street in the City Center District. It was designed by architect Mark Lemmon and shows off a cool style called Zig-zag Moderne. The building is a special part of the Dallas Downtown Historic District.

What does the Tower Petroleum Building look like?

The Tower Petroleum Building has a unique look called Zig-zag Moderne. This style uses sharp, angular shapes and patterns. It is one of the few buildings left in Downtown Dallas with this special design.

The outside of the building is covered in light-colored stone called limestone. It also has green panels between the windows. These panels are called spandrels. The top part of the building steps back twice. This means the upper floors are a bit smaller than the ones below them. The first step back happens at the 19th floor. The very top section, from the 22nd floor, steps back again. These setbacks are on three sides of the building.

When was the Tower Petroleum Building built?

The Tower Petroleum Building was finished in 1931. It is located in an area of Dallas that used to be a busy entertainment district. This area was known as Theater Row. The Majestic Theatre is a famous old theater right next to it. It is the only theater from that time that is still standing.

There used to be a theater called the Tower Theater right behind the building. The lobby for that theater was actually inside the office building itself. Later, in 1951, another building called the Corrigan Tower was built. It was constructed over and around the old Tower Theater.

From 1937 to 1943, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had offices in the Tower Petroleum Building. Their offices were on the 12th floor.

What is the Tower Petroleum Building used for now?

In June 2007, the city of Dallas approved a plan to give the Tower Petroleum Building a new life. A local company planned to spend $15 million to fix up the building. They wanted to turn it into a fancy hotel. This process is called "adaptive reuse," which means changing an old building to a new purpose.
