Exploring Toíta's Past
How Toíta Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. From then on, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States. This means it is connected to the U.S. but is not a state.
