|
Trayvon Jaquez Bromell, born on July 10, 1995, is an American professional runner. He is known for his incredible speed in sprinting races. He has won several important medals in the 100-meter dash.
Trayvon won bronze medals at the World Championships in 2015 and 2022. He also became the world indoor champion in the 60-meter race in 2016. He has represented the United States at the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Bromell was the first junior athlete (meaning under 20 years old) to run the 100 meters in less than 10 seconds. His time of 9.97 seconds was a junior world record. His fastest times are 6.42 seconds in the 60 meters and 9.76 seconds in the 100 meters. These times make him one of the fastest sprinters ever. In 2022, he also won the Diamond League championship for the 100-meter race.
Trayvon's Running Career
Early High School Success: 2013
In May 2013, Trayvon was competing for Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg, Florida. He won the 100-meter race at the Florida High School State Finals. He also placed second in the 200 meters.
In June, he almost broke the high school and junior world records for the 100 meters. He ran 9.99 seconds, which was his first time under 10 seconds. However, the wind was too strong behind him for it to count as a record.
Later that month, Bromell competed in the New Balance Nationals Outdoor event. He won the 100-meter final despite running into a strong headwind. In the 200-meter race, he set new personal bests but finished second.
A few days later, he won his first USATF title in the 100 meters at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He was later named the Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year for 2013.
Because of his win, he got to represent the United States internationally. In August, he competed at the Pan American Junior Championships in Colombia. He won his first international medal, a bronze, in the 100 meters. Then, he helped the US team win a gold medal in the 4 × 100 meters relay.
Breaking Records: 2014
On March 29, 2014, Trayvon tied the world junior record for the 100 meters. He ran 10.01 seconds at the Texas Relays while running for Baylor University. He was named the "2014 Texas Relays Most Outstanding Performer," an honor last given to famous runner Michael Johnson 24 years earlier.
On June 13, 2014, Bromell ran an even faster time of 9.92 seconds. This was during the semifinals at the NCAA Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships. However, this time also didn't count as a record because of too much wind. The next day, he ran 9.97 seconds in the final with legal wind conditions. This made him the sole holder of the men's 100m junior world record. He was the first freshman since 2005 to win the 100 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
World Championships Debut: 2015
In 2015, Trayvon returned to the NCAA Championships and improved his personal best in the 100m to 9.90 seconds.
At the 2015 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in June 2015, Bromell ran a personal best of 9.84 seconds. This made him one of the fastest 100m runners ever at that time. He finished second in the final, which qualified him for the 2015 World Championships.
Trayvon made his Diamond League debut in Monaco. He was a favorite for the 100m but was disqualified for a false start. However, he helped his team win the 4 × 100m relay.
In August, Bromell went to Beijing for the World Championships. He qualified for the 100-meter final. In the final, he tied for the bronze medal, running 9.92 seconds. This was the first time in World Championship 100m history that two athletes tied for a medal. In the 4 × 100 meters relay, his team won a silver medal. But they were later disqualified because of a mistake during a baton exchange. After this, Bromell became a professional athlete and signed a deal with New Balance.
Olympic Dreams and Challenges: 2016
2016 was expected to be a big year for Trayvon. He hoped to win a gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics and beat Usain Bolt, the fastest man in history.
Bromell started the year by competing indoors in the 60 meters. On March 18, 2016, he won the 60-meter title in 6.47 seconds in front of his home crowd in Oregon.
He began his outdoor season with a 200-meter race, which he won. He then ran his first 100m of the season in 10.04 seconds. After an injury, he focused on recovering to make the US Olympic team.
In July, Bromell competed at the US Olympic Trials. He ran 9.84 seconds, matching his personal best, and finished second. This qualified him for the Olympics.
Before the Olympics, his injury returned, but he decided to compete anyway. At the Rio Olympics, he finished eighth in the 100-meter final. In the 4 × 100m relay, he ran the final part of the race. His team finished third, but they were disqualified again due to an improper baton exchange. After the race, a scan showed he had torn his Achilles tendon.
Recovery and Comeback: 2017 & 2021
After a tough 2016, Bromell wanted to make a comeback in 2017. He hoped to race against Usain Bolt again at the 2017 World Championships. However, his recovery took longer than expected. He only raced once that season and did not advance to the semifinals. He then took time off to fully recover.
Bromell returned to his top form in 2021. He ran a personal best and world-leading time of 9.77 seconds in the 100m. He won the 2021 Olympic Trials.
At the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Bromell narrowly missed making the 100m final. On September 18, he competed in Kenya and set a new personal best, running the 100 meters in 9.76 seconds.
