Father Damien's Story
Father Damien was a member of a religious group called the SS.CC.. He chose to go to the Hawaiian Islands to help people who were sick with leprosy. Leprosy is a serious disease that used to be very hard to treat.
Father Damien dedicated his life to caring for the lepers on the island of Molokai. He helped them with their medical needs and also brought them comfort and hope. He was known as a "martyr of charity" because he gave so much of himself to help others, even though it was dangerous.
Becoming a Saint
Father Damien's work was so important that he was recognized by the Catholic Church. Pope Benedict XVI made him a saint on October 11, 2009. He is now known as Saint Damien of Molokai. In Tremelo, people often call him Pater Damiaan. His story shows how one person can make a huge difference in the world by helping those in need.
