Trevor Mitchell Bayne (born February 19, 1991) is an American professional stock car racing driver. He also owns a racing team and is a businessman. Trevor is known for being the youngest person to ever win the Daytona 500. This is the biggest race in NASCAR. He won it in 2011, just one day after his 20th birthday. This amazing win happened in only his second race in NASCAR's top series. It was his only victory in 187 total Cup Series races.

After his full-time racing ended in 2018, Bayne started a coffee shop called Mahalo Coffee Roasters in Knoxville, Tennessee. He also began racing dirt cars part-time in 2021. He shares his dirt racing team with his younger brother, Trey Bayne. In late 2022, he sold his coffee business. He was hoping to sign a full-time deal with Joe Gibbs Racing for the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2023, but that plan did not happen.

Racing Career Highlights

Early Days in Racing

Trevor Bayne was born in Knoxville, Tennessee in February 1991. He started racing go-karts when he was just five years old. For eight years, he won many races. He earned three World Championships and more than 300 feature wins. He also won 18 State and Track Championships.

In 2003, he moved up to the Allison Legacy Series. He was the youngest top rookie that year. The next year, he became the series' National Champion. He was the youngest person ever to win that title too. In two years, he won 14 races and got 19 pole positions. He finished in the top five 30 times in only 41 starts. In 2005, when Trevor was 15, he raced in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series. He earned the highest rookie honors there. In 2008, he joined Dale Earnhardt, Inc.'s program for young drivers. He raced in the NASCAR Camping World East Series. He won one race, had six top-five finishes, and seven top-10 finishes. He ended up fourth in the overall points. In 2009, he earned "Rookie of the Race" honors at the Toyota All-Star Showdown. That same year, he began racing in the Nationwide Series for Michael Waltrip Racing. After about two years, he moved to Roush Fenway Racing. He then started racing in the Sprint Cup Series for Wood Brothers Racing.

Starting in the Xfinity Series (2009–2010)

After his first team merged, Trevor Bayne became a development driver for Chip Ganassi Racing. He made his first Xfinity Series start in 2009 at Bristol Motor Speedway. He finished 23rd in that race. He then signed with Michael Waltrip Racing for a few races. In his first race with them, he started second and finished 28th. He also earned a pole position at the Kroger 200 and finished seventh in that race. He also finished seventh at the Virginia 529 College Savings 250.

During the 2010 season, Bayne drove for Diamond-Waltrip Racing. He raced in 28 events. He earned three pole positions, five top-five finishes, and nine top-ten finishes. After he announced he was leaving the team, he was replaced by other drivers.

Time with Roush Fenway Racing (2010–2014)

In October 2010, Trevor Bayne signed a long-term contract with Roush Fenway Racing. He drove the No. 17 Ford for the rest of 2010. For the whole 2010 season, he had three pole positions, six top-five finishes, and eleven top-ten finishes. He ended the season in seventh place in the points.

For the 2011 season, Roush moved him to the No. 16 Nationwide Series car. He had to take a break from racing for a while due to an illness. After getting better, Bayne returned to racing on June 4, 2011. He finished third in that race. He won his first Xfinity Series race at the Texas Motor Speedway on November 5, 2011. He beat Denny Hamlin in a close finish. Even though he only raced in 29 of 34 races, Bayne finished eleventh in points. He had five top-five finishes and fourteen top-ten finishes, plus his win in Texas.

In 2012, Roush moved Bayne to the No. 60 Ford. However, the team didn't have enough sponsors, so he only raced in five events. He came back to race one more time later that season.

In 2013, Bayne took over the No. 6 Nationwide Series car. On June 9, he won his second Xfinity Series race. He won the DuPont Pioneer 250 at Iowa Speedway.

Bayne continued to race the No. 6 car for Roush Fenway Racing in 2014. A sponsor called Advocare supported him for the entire season. Bayne came very close to winning several races in the spring of 2014. He almost won at Dover but was just beaten by Kyle Busch. He finished second again at Chicago. He also won $200,000 in a special Dash-4-Cash program at the Iowa race.

Returning to the Xfinity Series (2022–2023)

On February 9, 2022, Joe Gibbs Racing announced that Trevor Bayne would drive their No. 18 car in seven races. He raced at Fontana, Phoenix, Charlotte, Nashville, Loudon, Las Vegas, and Homestead. Bayne finished third in his first race at Fontana. He finished fourth at Phoenix and ninth at Charlotte. At Nashville, he finished second, and he was second again at Loudon. He finished 13th at Talladega and fifth at Las Vegas. In his final race of the season at Homestead, he finished sixth.

On August 23, 2023, Bayne announced he would return to Joe Gibbs Racing for three more races. He drove the No. 19 Toyota Supra at Daytona, Bristol, and Texas. He finished 29th at Daytona after being in a big crash. At Bristol, he had a good race and finished seventh. At Texas, he was in another crash, which led to a 33rd-place finish.

Trevor Bayne moved up to the Sprint Cup Series in 2010. He raced for the Wood Brothers Racing team in the Texas 500. He started 28th and finished 17th. He returned to the Wood Brothers team in 2011 for a few races. He won the very first race of the season, the Daytona 500. This made him the youngest winner in Daytona 500 history, at 20 years and one day old. This was the Wood Brothers' first win since 2001.

Despite the big win, Bayne finished 40th the next week at Phoenix. The Daytona 500 win also meant Bayne could race in the special NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race in 2011 and 2012. After a race in Texas, Bayne was hospitalized for a spider bite but was released a few days later. Bayne raced at Talladega but was caught in an early crash. His illness returned after racing at Nashville, and he was hospitalized for five weeks. Other drivers filled in for him during this time. The illness was first thought to be Lyme disease. Later that year, it was announced that Bayne had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Bayne returned to racing and won his first Nationwide race in Texas. For 2012, 2013, and 2014, Bayne continued to race the No. 21 car for a limited number of races.

Full-Time with Roush Fenway Racing (2015–2018)

On May 24, 2014, Roush Fenway Racing announced that Bayne would race the No. 6 car full-time in the Sprint Cup Series for the 2015 season. Bayne was not eligible to be a "Rookie of the Year" because he had already raced in several events over four years.

Bayne qualified 15th for the 2015 Daytona 500. However, a crash in an earlier race forced him to use a backup car. He was involved in another crash during the Daytona 500 but still finished the race.

After some tough races, Bayne had a good run at the 2015 GEICO 500. While running third, he lost control and caused a big crash. He later said that "dirty air" from other cars caused him to lose control. At Dover, Bayne was in another accident. After that race, he was fined $20,000 for getting out of his car without permission from officials. This rule was put in place for safety reasons.

Trevor Bayne got his first top-ten finish of 2015 at Michigan. He finished ninth in a rain-delayed race. He also earned his first ARCA win at Pocono, where he started first and led most of the race. He got another top-ten finish in the Cup Series at the 2015 Coke Zero 400. However, his struggles continued, and he had some very low finishes in other races.

To start 2016, Bayne finished 28th in the Daytona 500. The next week at Atlanta, he surprised many by qualifying fourth. He finished 22nd in that race. In the following weeks, he had finishes like 17th at Las Vegas and 20th at Auto Club Speedway. He then had a great fifth-place finish at Bristol, his first top-five of the year. At Talladega, he had another strong race, leading laps and finishing tenth. At Dover, he finished tenth again. At Daytona, Bayne scored his third career top-five finish, coming in third place.

In February 2017, Bayne got his first top-ten finish of the season at the 2017 Daytona 500, finishing tenth. At the 2017 Brickyard 400, Bayne had a fantastic race. He moved up to fourth place and was in a position to take the lead. However, a caution flag came out just as he took the lead. He later got caught in a crash with other cars. Bayne said he had never been more upset after a loss in his racing career.

Later in 2017, he earned two top-five finishes at Michigan and Bristol. At Talladega, he finished third even after his car was damaged in crashes. He got another top-ten finish at Martinsville, finishing sixth after passing cars on the last lap. Bayne finished 22nd in points for the second year in a row. He also set a new record for himself with two top-five finishes and six top-ten finishes in one year.

On April 14, 2018, it was reported that former Roush Fenway Racing driver Matt Kenseth would return to race the No. 6 car in some races. This meant Bayne would race part-time for the rest of the season. After a summer of difficult races, it was announced on September 12, 2018, that Bayne would not return to the No. 6 Ford Mustang in 2019. This made him a free agent, meaning he didn't have a team.

Free Agent (2019)

After leaving Roush Fenway Racing at the end of 2018, Trevor Bayne and his family moved back home to Tennessee. In 2019, Bayne built a farm. In June, his family opened the Mahalo Coffee Roasters store in Knoxville. Bayne later shared that he had offers to drive for other teams, but he didn't have the money from sponsors needed for those opportunities.

Craftsman Truck Series Races

On August 31, 2020, Niece Motorsports announced that Bayne would make his Truck Series debut. He raced their No. 40 Silverado at Darlington. He then raced for Niece again at Richmond. Bayne finished fifth at Bristol but was disqualified because his truck was too low after the race. At Talladega, he finished second, losing the win on the final lap. After that race, he confirmed he would race the No. 45 truck for the rest of the 2020 season.

Personal Life

Trevor Bayne is an outspoken Christian. He has said that his faith helped him deal with both his sudden success after winning the Daytona 500 and his health issues in 2011. He has been on several mission trips to Mexico.

On November 12, 2013, Bayne announced that he had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

In December 2012, Bayne announced he was engaged to Ashton Clapp. They got married on June 4, 2013. Their first child, Elizabeth Kate, was born in December 2015. Their son, Levi Jensen Bayne, was born in June 2017. Their third child, Luka, was born in September 2019. In 2019, Trevor and Ashton opened Mahalo Coffee Roasters, a coffee shop in Knoxville, Tennessee. Their fourth child, Jude, was born in December 2021. In late 2022, he sold Mahalo Coffee Roasters. Their fifth child, Jett, was born in September 2023.

Bayne is the older brother and team owner of dirt car driver Trey Bayne. They share a car in the American Crate All-Star Series.
