Troublesome Creek (Missouri) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Troublesome Creek is a stream found in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Missouri. It flows through Knox, Lewis, and Marion counties. This creek is a smaller stream that flows into a larger one called the South Fabius River.

Where Troublesome Creek Flows

Troublesome Creek starts in Knox County, near Missouri Route 15 and north of the town of Edina. Its starting point, or headwaters, is located at 40°12′49″N 92°10′35″W / 40.21361°N 92.17639°W / 40.21361; -92.17639. From there, it flows towards the southeast.

The creek then goes under Missouri Route 6 east of Edina and continues south of Knox City. It then enters Lewis County south of La Belle. It crosses under Missouri Route 156 northeast of Steffenville.

Next, Troublesome Creek moves into Marion County, northeast of the community of Nelsonville. It passes south of the small community of Naomi. Finally, it joins the South Fabius River south of the community of Hester. The point where it meets the South Fabius River is at 39°54′17″N 91°37′17″W / 39.90472°N 91.62139°W / 39.90472; -91.62139.

Why the Name 'Troublesome'?

The creek got its unique name, Troublesome Creek, because of a natural event that happened often: flash floods. A flash flood is a very quick and sudden flood that can happen after heavy rain. These floods would make the creek "troublesome" for people living nearby or trying to cross it.
