Trout Lake is located in the northwest part of Klickitat County. It is about 14 miles (22.5 kilometers) south of the peak of Mount Adams. Mount Adams is a very tall mountain, reaching 12,276 feet (3,742 meters) high.

State Route 141 goes through the community. This road travels about 22 miles (35 kilometers) south to the town of White Salmon. It also goes about 5 miles (8 kilometers) west to where it ends at the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

The United States Census Bureau says that the Trout Lake area covers about 18.1 square kilometers (7.0 square miles). Most of this area is land. Only a small part, about 0.1 square kilometers (0.04 square miles), is water. The community sits in the Trout Lake Valley. Trout Lake Creek flows through this valley and eventually joins the White Salmon River. The White Salmon River then flows into the large Columbia River.
