Truth facts for kids
Truth is about what is real and true. If something is a fact, then it is true. For example, it's true that the sky is often blue.
The word truth comes from old English words like tríewþ. A famous thinker named Aristotle once said that if you say something is real when it is, or not real when it isn't, then you are speaking the truth. If you say the opposite, then it's false.
Truth is a noun, like "table" or "friend". The word for something that is true is true.
People often talk about truth in two main ways:
- How to figure out if a proposition (which is like a statement or a claim) is true.
- How to find the truth when you have a question or a problem to solve.
Many philosophers (people who think deeply about life) have shared their ideas on these topics.

What is a True Statement?
For example, it is true that a dog is an animal. This is a fact. It is untrue or false that a dog is a plant. This is not a fact.
Other Words for Truth
If something is not true, we call it false. Sometimes, people talk about a "half-truth." This means something that is partly true but also partly false. Or it might be true, but the person telling it doesn't share the whole story.
When you say things that are true, you are "speaking the truth." If someone says something that is untrue, and they know it's untrue, that's called a lie. A person who often tells lies is called a "liar."
Truth and Logic
A long time ago, Pontius Pilate asked, "What is truth?" (This is from the Bible, in the book of John).
In logic, which is the study of correct reasoning, true is one of the two main values. The other main value is false. Aristotle was one of the first people to set up a formal system for logic. His system is called propositional logic. It helps us understand how statements can be true or false and how they connect. Other types of logic use mathematics or symbols. For example, Boolean algebra is a type of math that deals with things being either true or false.
Philosophers often discuss what makes something true and how we can know if something is true. This area of study is called epistemology.
