Trump Tower is a tall building in New York City. It has 58 floors and stands 664 feet (202 m) high. You can find it on Fifth Avenue in the Midtown Manhattan area. This building is home to offices, shops, and apartments. It is also the main office for the Trump Organization.

The tower is named after Donald Trump, a businessman and former U.S. president. He developed the building. His family, including his wife Melania Trump and son Barron Trump, live in a special apartment at the very top. Before Trump Tower was built, a famous department store called Bonwit Teller was on this spot.

Der Scutt designed Trump Tower. Donald Trump and the Equitable Life Assurance Company helped build it. The city allowed it to be so tall because it was a "mixed-use" building. This means it has different types of spaces like shops, offices, and homes. Trump was allowed to add more floors because he included public spaces. These spaces include shops and outdoor terraces for everyone to enjoy.

Building Trump Tower had some challenges. For example, some old sculptures from the Bonwit Teller store were removed. The tower opened in stages from February to November 1983. At first, it was hard to find businesses for the office and retail spaces. However, all the apartments sold very quickly. After Donald Trump became president in 2016, more people visited the tower. This led to increased security around the building.

About Trump Tower

How Trump Tower Was Built

Trump Tower was designed by Der Scutt. It was built where the old Bonwit Teller store used to be. Donald Trump bought the land in 1979. He wanted to build a very luxurious tall building. The old store was taken down to make way for Trump Tower.

The building is in a special part of Fifth Avenue. Usually, a building this tall would not be allowed on such a small piece of land. But it was approved because it had many uses. It included shops, offices, and homes. The Trump Organization also built a walkway that connects to another building. They also bought "air rights" from the Tiffany's store next door. This allowed them to build even taller.

The tower has a large, five-story public space called an atrium. This atrium helped Trump get permission to build a taller tower. It also included plans for a garden terrace. The atrium is 15,000 square feet (1,400 m2) big. In return, Trump could add 20 more floors to his tower. At the time, it was the only skyscraper on Fifth Avenue with its own shops.

The tower was first planned to have 60 stories. This included offices, apartments, and mechanical floors. The final plan had 26 office floors and 39 apartment floors. These apartments were on levels 30–68. The building cost about $300 million to build. When it opened, it had 58 stories. However, the top floor is marked as "68." This is because Trump said the tall atrium counts as 10 regular floors.

The first shops opened in Trump Tower in early 1983. The grand opening for the atrium and stores was on February 14, 1983. The apartments and offices opened soon after. The main shops on the ground floor opened on November 30, 1983. The Bonwit Teller store stayed in the building for a while. Many other fancy stores also opened there.

By 1986, some of the first stores had closed. The rent for shops in the tower was very high. The Bonwit Teller store closed in 1990.

The apartments were very popular. Almost all of the 263 apartments sold in the first four months. They were expensive, starting at $600,000. The most expensive apartment sold for $15 million in 1985. Many rich and famous people bought apartments there. These included Johnny Carson, Sophia Loren, and Steven Spielberg. Trump made $300 million from selling the apartments. This was more than the cost to build the tower.

Over the years, the tower's value changed. In 2006, it was valued at $288 million. By 2015, its value went up to $600 million. This was partly because of increased rent from stores like Gucci. However, in 2016, the tower's value dropped. This was due to lower income and changes in the real estate market.

Trump Tower is 664 feet (202 m) tall. It was designed by Der Scutt. The building is made of reinforced concrete. It was the tallest building of its kind in New York City when it was finished. The tower has 28 sides and a unique, jagged shape. This design gives it more windows.

The public areas inside the tower are covered in a pink marble. There are four gold-colored elevators for visitors. A special elevator goes directly to the penthouse where the Trump family lives. The apartments have mirrors and brass decorations.

The five-level atrium is a special public space. It has a 60 feet (18 m)-high indoor waterfall. There are also shops, cafes, and a bridge over the waterfall's pool. The atrium is decorated with marble and has a skylight.

The tower has two outdoor terraces. These were part of the agreement with the city. One terrace is on the fifth floor, facing 57th Street. It has trees and a fountain. A smaller terrace is on the fourth floor, facing 56th Street. It has granite benches. There is also a walkway to another public space nearby.

The main entrance is on Fifth Avenue. There is a side entrance on 56th Street for private use. Above the main entrance, large brass letters spell "TRUMP TOWER." The tower is easy to reach by public transportation. It is close to several New York City Subway stations.

Shops in the tower include the Gucci flagship store. There are also stores selling Trump merchandise. During Donald Trump's presidential campaign, these stores sold campaign items.

Since 2015, more tourists have visited Trump Tower. Many visitors are supporters of Donald Trump. The tower became a popular spot for tourists after he was elected president.

Critics have described the tower's design in different ways. Some called it "dramatically handsome." Others said it was "showy" or "pretentious." The atrium, however, was often praised. One person called it New York City's "most pleasant interior public space."

What Happens Inside Trump Tower

The TV show The Apprentice was filmed on the fifth floor of Trump Tower. The famous "boardroom" where people were "fired" was a real TV studio set inside the tower. Donald J. Trump for President, Inc., which was his campaign office, was also in this space.
