Truskmore South-East Cairn is a special spot in County Leitrim, Ireland. It's the highest point in the whole county! This means it's the very top of Leitrim. It stands tall at 631 metres (about 2,070 feet) above the sea.

This high point is actually part of a bigger mountain called Truskmore. Truskmore SE Cairn is about 450 metres (about 1,476 feet) to the southeast of Truskmore's main peak. The main Truskmore peak is even taller, but it's located in County Sligo, not Leitrim.

What is a Cairn?

A cairn is a pile of stones built by people. You often find them on top of mountains or hills. They can be used as landmarks, memorials, or to mark a special spot. The cairn at Truskmore SE Cairn helps show exactly where the highest point of County Leitrim is.

Why is it a "County Top"?

Every county in Ireland has a highest point, often called a "county top" or "county high point." Truskmore SE Cairn is special because it holds this title for County Leitrim. Even though the main Truskmore mountain is higher, its summit is in a different county.

The way mountains are measured can be a bit tricky. Truskmore SE Cairn has a "prominence" of 0 metres. This means it's not a completely separate mountain peak. Instead, it's like a shoulder or a bump on the side of the larger Truskmore mountain. Because of this, it doesn't appear on many lists of independent mountains.

However, it's still the highest spot you can stand on within County Leitrim's borders! The highest independent mountain peak that is fully in Leitrim is Tievebaun. It's close by and stands at 611 metres (about 2,005 feet) tall.

The Dartry Mountains

Truskmore SE Cairn is part of the Dartry Mountains. This mountain range is located in the northwest of Ireland, mostly in Counties Sligo and Leitrim. The Dartry Mountains are known for their unique shapes and stunning views. They are a popular place for hiking and exploring.

The mountains were formed a very long time ago. They are made up of different types of rock, including sandstone and shale. Over millions of years, wind, rain, and ice have shaped them into the beautiful peaks we see today.
