Tsushima Island facts for kids
Tsushima Island (pronounced Sue-SHEE-mah, written 対馬 in Japanese) is a Japanese island located in the waters between South Korea and Japan. It is known for its unique location and natural beauty.
Tsushima Island's Past
Tsushima Island has a long and interesting history. Starting around the early 500s, the island became a province of Japan, known as Tsushima Province. This meant it was an important area governed by Japan.
Later, during the Meiji period (a time of big changes in Japan from 1868 to 1912), Tsushima Island and its province became part of Nagasaki Prefecture. Today, it is still part of Nagasaki Prefecture, which is a region in Japan. Because of its location, Tsushima has often played a role in events between Japan and its neighbors.
Nature and Wildlife
Tsushima Island is home to some special plants and animals. One of the most famous is the Tsushima leopard cat, which is a wild cat found only on this island. It's a very rare animal! The island also has beautiful trees like the Yoshino cherry and the Chionanthus retusus (a type of fringe tree).
