A tulku (pronounced TOOL-koo) is a special kind of Tibetan Buddhist teacher, called a lama. These teachers are believed to have gained the power to choose where and when they will be reborn. They do this many times, so they can keep helping all living things. This idea comes from a promise called a Bodhisattva vow, which is a promise to work for the good of everyone.
The most famous tulkus are the Dalai Lamas. People believe that each Dalai Lama is a new life of the one before them. This tradition started with Gendun Drup, who lived from 1391 to 1474. Another very old group of tulkus are the Karmapas. They are the spiritual leaders of the Karma Kagyu lineage, a part of Tibetan Buddhism. The first Karmapa was Düsum Khyenpa, who lived from 1110 to 1193.

What Are Tulkus Called Elsewhere?
Tibetan Buddhism is also a main religion for people in Mongolia. In Mongolia, a tulku is often called qubilγan. They might also be given the special title qutuγtu, which means "holy one." In the common Khalkha dialect, this word is hutagt.
In China, a newer word for tulku is huófó (活佛). This word means "living Buddha." So, sometimes you might hear tulkus called "Living Buddhas."
How Tulkus Are Found
When a high lama passes away, a search begins for their next rebirth. This search often involves looking for special signs or dreams. Religious leaders might also consult ancient texts or oracles.
The Search Process
Once a child is found, they go through tests to see if they are the true reincarnation. These tests might include identifying objects that belonged to the previous lama. If the child is confirmed, they begin special training from a very young age.
Education and Training
The education of a tulku is very strict and detailed. They learn about Buddhist philosophy, meditation, and ancient languages. They are prepared to take on the important role of leading and teaching their community.
Important Tulku Lineages
There are many different lines of tulkus in Tibetan Buddhism. Each lineage has its own history and special role.
The Dalai Lamas
The Dalai Lamas are the spiritual leaders of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. They are also seen as the leaders of the Tibetan people. The current Dalai Lama is the 14th in this long line.
The Karmapas
The Karmapas are the leaders of the Karma Kagyu school. This is one of the oldest tulku lineages. They are known for their deep spiritual wisdom and their contributions to Buddhist teachings.
