Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery is a cool museum in Carlisle, England. It first opened its doors in 1893. The main building used to be a fancy old house called a Jacobean mansion.

When it first opened, Tullie House was more than just a museum. It also had a library, an art school, and a technical school. The building itself, including its newer parts, is a very important historic building. Even the wall and gates outside are special!

The schools moved out in the 1950s. The library also moved in 1986. This gave the museum more space to grow. It had big makeovers in 1989-90 and again in 2000-01.

Since 2011, Tullie House has been run by a special group called the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery Trust. It works with other museums in the area.

What You Can See at Tullie House

Tullie House has many different types of collections. These include amazing things from the natural world. You can see collections of animals, plants, and rocks.

A plant collector named Clara Winsome Muirhead worked here in the 1940s. She gave many plant samples to the museum. The museum also has beautiful art. This includes paintings by Edward Burne-Jones and other Pre-Raphaelite artists. You can also see works by Stanley Spencer, Winifred Nicholson, and Sheila Fell.

Musical Instruments

The museum has a special collection of stringed musical instruments. One of the most interesting is a violin made by Andrea Amati. This violin once belonged to the royal family of France!

Roman History

Carlisle was an important place during Roman times. There were two Roman forts nearby. One of them, called Uxelodunum (or Stanwix today), was the biggest fort along Hadrian's Wall.

Tullie House Museum has many important items from Roman Britain. It often has special shows about Hadrian's Wall. This famous wall was built by the Romans across northern England.

After the Romans

The museum also tells stories about history after the Romans left. You can learn about the Vikings who came to England. You can also discover the Border Reivers. These were groups of people who lived near the border of England and Scotland long ago.

Awards and Recognition

Tullie House Museum is a great place for families. In 2015, it won the annual Family Friendly Museum Award. This award celebrates museums that are fun and welcoming for kids and parents.
