Tulsa Public Schools (TPS) is a large school district that serves the city of Tulsa, Oklahoma and nearby areas. It is located in Northeastern Oklahoma. As of 2022, TPS is the biggest school district in Oklahoma, with about 33,211 students. This was the first time it was larger than Oklahoma City Public Schools since 2013.

The district is managed by a group of people called the school board. These members are chosen by voters. The Oklahoma State Department of Education has officially approved Tulsa Public Schools, meaning it meets state standards.

What is Accreditation?

Accreditation means that a school or school district meets certain quality standards set by an official group. It shows that the schools are doing a good job.

In 2022, the Governor of Oklahoma, Kevin Stitt, asked for an investigation into Tulsa Public Schools. He was worried about how the district was handling its money. He also had questions about how long schools were closed because of COVID-19. There were also concerns about whether the district was following a new state law. This law limits what public schools can teach about race, gender, and history.

In 2023, State Superintendent Ryan Walters also talked about his worries. He said these concerns could affect the district's accreditation. Later in August 2023, Walters listed four main problems. These were:

  • Not managing money well.
  • Spending more money on office staff than on teaching in classrooms.
  • Students' reading scores getting worse.
  • Some schools not performing well.

Where is the District Located?

Most of the Tulsa Public Schools district is in Tulsa County. It covers most of Tulsa city. It also includes parts of nearby towns like Oakhurst, Sand Springs, and Sapulpa. Small parts of the district also reach into Creek, Osage, and Wagoner counties.

The School Board

The Tulsa School Board is a group of seven people. Each person represents a different part of the school district. They are elected by the people living in their area. Each board member serves for four years. Their terms are "staggered," which means not all members are up for election at the same time. This helps keep the board stable.

The school board has important jobs. They create rules for the district. They also manage the budget, which is how the district spends its money. The board hires the superintendent, who is the main leader of the district. They are also the final place for appeals if there are big problems. The board can only make official decisions during their public meetings.
