Tuppy's Early Life
Tuppy Ngintja Goodwin is a Pitjantjatjara woman. She grew up in a place called Mimili. This area is in the remote north-west of South Australia. It's part of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands.
She was born in Bumbali Creek. This place is her father's traditional land, known as his Country. Tuppy moved to Mimili as a baby. Back then, Mimili was a cattle station called Everard Park. Some of her brothers and sisters are also artists. These include Robin Kankapankatja and Margaret Dodd.
Her Career
For many years, Tuppy worked at the Mimili Anangu School. She was a pre-school teacher there. She stopped working in 2009.
Her Art
Tuppy Goodwin is a painter. She works with Mimili Maku Arts. She is also a director there. Through her art and dance, she helps keep traditional laws and culture strong.
She has been painting with Mimili Maku Arts since 2010. Like many artists at the centre, she paints her Tjukurrpa (Dreaming). Her art often shows Antara. This is a special rockhole at Bumbali Creek. It's a place where women perform a dance ceremony. During this dance, they paint their bodies with red ochre. Tuppy also paints the Tjala (Honey Ant) Dreaming.
Tuppy's paintings have a unique style. She uses smooth brushstrokes over solid blocks of color. This creates a rich texture on the canvas. Her distinct style has made her very successful.
Awards and Recognition
In 2010, Tuppy Goodwin was a finalist. This was for the Telstra Aboriginal and Torres Strait Art Awards. These awards were held in Darwin, Northern Territory.
In 2020, her painting Antara was a finalist. This painting was made in 2018 using acrylic paint on linen. It was part of the John Leslie Art Prize. This prize was held at the Gippsland Art Gallery in Sale, Victoria.
In 2023, another painting called Antara won a big prize. This large painting was made in 2022. It used synthetic polymer on linen. It won the A$50,000 Arthur Guy Memorial Painting Prize. This prize was given at the Bendigo Art Gallery.
